850 Automatic Transmission Interchangeability 850 93

My sister's 1993 850 automatic transmission is kaput at 53,000 miles. Volvo lists 3 different parts numbers for 850 non-turbo automatics. Will later model 850 automatics bolt-up with a 1993 model? Any compatibility problems? Thanks!

Re: 850 Automatic Transmission Interchangeability 850 93

Bruce,

Your transmission is most likely a AW50-42LE Later model transmissions will bolt up but there are compatability problems. When I checked with the wrecker about interchange for my 1994 850 , I was told only 1993 and 1994 interchange. However, I installed a 1998 transmission and have travelled about 5K without any problems. The speedometer sensors are not compatible between the early and later models. If you want more details I can provide them.

Re: 850 Automatic Transmission Interchangeability 850 93 GLT

Hi Bruce,

Is there any way to determine the year of the transmission? Is it stamped on the ID tag? I'm in the process of taking the tranny out of my '93 for the purpose of changing the rear main seal and I wanted to see what year it was from. It looks like a previous owner had it changed at some point which isn't surprising with 122,000 miles. It shifts great but I ocasionally get the "flashing arrow" so I'll change the PNP switch while I've got it out.

Call a dealers parts department too as a good parts guy should be able to tell you if another PN will work or not (whether there's any bulletins or footnotes on it). I wouldn't just guess or assume otherwise as it's too much work if you guess wrong.

The current part number for the 93 is 8111065 and it is listed as 93 only. It may be that a later unit will fit with minor mods. You could call a salvage yard and have them check in their Hollander interchange book to see.
