Yoko Parada vs. P-Zero, 205/45/17 850 1995

Hey all,

Well it's been a long while since I've last posted here. 850RACR is doing quite well (though with all this rain in the SF area, is quite dirty), and I've been keeping busy as well, graduating from Stanford in June (Economics), and now working for JPMorgan equity research in San Francisco.

Anyways, the time has come to get some new tires for my 17" OZs. I'm looking at 205/45/ZR/17s, either the Pirelli P-Zeros (which I have now) or the Yokohama Paradas. Was hoping someone out there had experiences with the Paradas, specifically, as I have had the P-Zeros on for the last year. I have been very satisfied with the P-Zeros, but am considering a change for a couple reasons - first, wet weather traction is something of a concern with the P-Zeros; second, cost--the P-Zeros certainly aren't that expensive as high performance tires go (around $149), but the Paradas are significantly cheaper (at around $100-110); third, let's be honest, the tread design on the Paradas looks pretty damn cool.

For those of you with experience or knowledge of the Paradas--

How many miles have you gotten/would you expect to get from the Paradas?

How is the wet traction? Dry traction?

Noise levels? (one thing I like about the P-Zeros is that they are very quiet, even at high speeds)

Thanks for the help, it's nice to "be back"

--Ping Shen

PS - for those of you interested in my racing encounters, there have been several of note--got dusted by an S2000, ran even with a NOS-driven SH Prelude, beat out a 740iL sport, and of course had a few rice rockets for lunch every now and then. of course, lest I start another flame war, all of the above listed encounters (i probably shouldn't even call them races) took place on open roads, at speeds well under the posted limits;-)

Hmm..I always thought those Paradas for ghetto ricers. Doesn't look all that to me....P-Zero on the other hand is a complete different tire.

why do you say it's a completely different tire?

do you know if there are any tests between the two?

Good for you, Ping (graduating soon and already having a good, I think, job) and welcome back!

I did not realize that the P Zeros were that inexpensive! A friend of mine had the "Yokie" Paradas on his '00 Mitsu Eclipse and he absolutely hated them as they only lasted 18,000 miles (w/ out serious abuse, meaning spinning the fron tires all the time, etc.). Yes, the tread looks pretty darn cool but I am not sure if his case was an aberration or not...I never heard him complain about poor traction in either the dry or wet pavement.

How the heck did you manage to beat all these cars under the speed limit??? Hehehe!

      Hey Yannis!

Thanks! and good to hear from you again. It is weird that the P-Zeros are so inexpensive isn't it? I think that P-Zeros in a lightly different size (215/45/zr/17 or something like that) are significantly more expensive. Don't know why the particular size I use is so much less. But I'm not complaining.

Interesting info on the Paradas. I've had the P-Zeros on for over a year now and about 20,000 miles (well-abused tires at some points, though less so recently with all the rain) and they are about ready to go--I'm surprised to hear that the Paradas were done after 18k! I would have thought they'd last longer than the softer P-Zero.

yeah, I was surprised too...On the P Zeros, your mileage is "normal"...I have never heard from any of our customers who have them that they got over 22,000 miles....not on that tire...

I have had both the Paradas and the Zeros on my '95 T-5R and my '96 R Wagon. Take it from a guy who has gone through a lot of tires, the Parada is by far the better tire for the money. Just as quiet and has longer tread life x2 (AAA & 300 vs. 180 and A). Both are equal in the wet. Dry traction is superb. Sidewall stiffness is more in the Parada.

Bottom line for me is that I got very tired of the P-Zeros lack of longevity for street driving. ALSO, (this is going to seem strange) two of the 12 P-Zeros I have purchased fell apart on the inside sidewall. No striking of road debris, no abnormal abuse and no extreme amounts of mileage...they just went south on me. Each time the manufacturer stepped in and replaced them to a certain degree monetarily.

Don't bother with the Zeros. Get the Parada or something else. however, for the money you can't the Yoko.
