Turning off the air bags 850 1994

Can anyone tell me how to temporarily disable the at least the passenger side air bag. I would gladly disable both, but prefer to do only the passenger side so that a child can ride in the front seat.

Thanks!

Isn't there a procedure to get a switch installed? 850 1994

Find a dealer that will accomodate you...I think it takes a form from the NHTSA which is easily available, probably on the web.

Finding a dealer or tech to disconnect the airbag or install the swtich is another problem....

Re: Turning off the air bags 850 1994

The best way I could think of to turn off the passenger bag and still have the rest of the SRS system in tack and working would be to purchase a dummy load and plug it into the connector for the passenger air bag. Once you have the dummy load, you can get to the connector by removing the glove box.

I hate to sound like an idiot, but what is a "dummy load"?

Re: Turning off the air bags 850 1994

In order to eliminate the air bag as a possible source of a problem, Volvo has a tool (dummy load) that is nothing more than a 2.2 ohm resister mounted on a small plastic plate that can be plugged into the connector where the air bag would normally plug in. By plugging into the "Dummy load" the circuits think the air bag is still hooked up when the system checks it's self. In the trouble shooting world if a dummy load is inserted and a code for open circuit to the air bag is still set then we would know it is the wiring or connectors and not the air bag that would need repairing/replacing. The "dummy load" comes in a few different set ups, the only thing changing is the connector type, it is a tool that could be ordered from a Volvo Parts department.
