2 headlight bulbs fail in 2 days? V70-XC70 1999

What's the chance that one bulb goes out on Friday and on my way to the store to get a replacement today I notice the other is out? Both were burnt out and replacements fixed everything, but could something strange be going on?

I had the same thing happen about 3 days apart on my '95 855R last week!

We have driven 3 850s for a total of 31 years and about 310K and I honestly think that we have not burned out that many low beams - or highs either,

Now this is wierd - as I went to respond to this post I turned on the floor lamp so I could see the laptop keyboard better. As I turned on the lamp the bulb burned out.

Some cars have cold weather compensation built into the charging system, where it charges a bit hotter as the temperature drops, so the first onset of cold weather can burn out the headlight(s). Many years ago I had a Dodge van that was really bad about doing that.

Yeah, well it really hasn't gotten that cold yet. Low around 50. Anyway I put in two nee bulbs ($35, ouch!)and the lights are on.

How come the DRLs don't run off the high beams at low voltage so they don't wear out the bulbs we use the most? Thanks.

Your comment on the DRLs is something I wrote to Volvo about a lot. But, as you already know, the Swedish learned a lot from the Scots and turning on the outside lights was cheaper than running a separate circuit. I always wanted just the fog lamps on as DRLs, but the fogs were extra equipment...

As to your headlights, the bulbs get too hot in the design of the lamp housing. All 14.5 volts are allowed to go down the wires, which is a bit much.

I've noticed that heat is a problem as the plastic plugs to the H7s has disintegrated. I was thinking of putting some higher wattage bulbs but decided not to add heat. Now I'm wondering if running the DRLs are too much since they are on all the time. Maybe I should just install some cheap fogs to run all the time.

          How was your trip?

It's a no-win situation. On my 1998 I turned the DRLs off and I seldom drive at night. The bulb holders corroded!

Trip was good, saw a lot of people for the first time in 20 years. About 3200 miles, or so. Weather was on our side.

I suppose you could check the voltage at the headlights.
Actually, that same thing happened to a friend of mine years ago on his Pontiac Sunfire.
