My God...I have an oil leak! 850 '94

Well, after years of trouble free driving my 850 has sprung a leak. It's engine oil with two or three quarter sized drops appearing over-night in the garage. Coincidently, it started the day after I "topped-up" the oil. thinking maybe some dripped down the engine I kept an eye on it. Well, it's been one week and definately there is a leak. I have always preached the importance of cleaning the flame trap etc, to avoid excess pressure resulting in a rear engine seal blowing...this is my worst fear. Can anyone suggest other places to look? Was adding oil to just above the fill line (which in my opinion shouldn't matter)had anything to do with it? The car is going up a hoist at the end of the month for fluid changes, I'll have a look then but in the meantime appreciate any comments.

    Tony,

I hope you didn't do what I did - which was to overfill the crankcase. Immediatly after doing this I developed a leak in the front seal and another in the seal between the lower two sections of the block. If this is what you have, the bad news is it will cost you plenty to get it fixed. There is no good news on this.

    Sorry,

    Mike

      Michael,

Thanks for the response. How much "extra" did you put in? When checking the dip stick, the level is a hair over the fill line, but within the full range of the indicator. I have seeked out suggestions outside of brickboard and everyone seems to agree that a little extra oil in a crankcase should not in itself create a leak...When the problem is troubleshooted in a couple of weeks I'll post the results. When checking the engine from the top, all sides appear dry and I can't see any source, when looking under the engine, it appears to become from the back near under the firewall. Oil will spread and travel far from the source when driving so the real test will be removing the splash guard and taking a look...

Check your oil filler-cap gasket. My '94 850T filler gasket was dried out and was letting some oil by,making quite a mess. good luck!
