'98 V70 Owners: Cruise Control Light? V70-XC70 1998

Just bought a '98 V70 GLT. The cruise control works, but the little light on the dash that says "cruise" doesn't illuminate. We have a '99 S70 and the light always works; just wondering if '98 V70s are the same? Everything else seems alike. Thanks in advance.

    Mine (Sept. 1997 production) doesn't have a light either.

    Nice difference with respect to the '98s for hot-rodders is that the ECM can be re-programmed.

    '99s are completely "drive by wire".

      Uncle O,

      I'm a little confused. `98 ECUs can be re-programmed? Are you talking about chipping? I thought they all can be chipped?

      As for Drive by Wire, as I understand it, that refers to the fact that there is no actual throttle cable on cars that are drive by wire (Volvo, VW, MB have gone to it with various complaints about response time when STOMPING on gas, as well as feed back from the lead foot)

      Re: '98 V70 Owners: Cruise Control Light? V70-XC70 1998

      Thx for your response. It seems obvious to me that you'd want an annunciator light to work when the thing's hooked up. But at least I know I don't have to take the car back to the dealer.

      About reprogramming the ECM---let me ask a dumb question: what does ECM stand for, and is there a manual out there that shows how to do it? Are we talking about the turbo boost here?

      Thanks again.

        ECM=Electronic Control Module=ECU=Electronic Control Module

        There are a variety of vendors who offer reprogramming for the 850-70 units, 1994-1998. IPD uses the Swedish firm, TME. (www.ipdusa.com and www.tme.se) According to IPD as of last fall, "1999-2000 models use a new engine management system and upgrades are in development." I've not looked into this recently.

        I've not yet done this, my car is still under the extended warranty, and my dealer would use any excuse to squirm out of a warranty claim.

    MY98 does not have a "CRUISE" light. Also, there are other minor differences. The buttons for the overhead lights are not backlit on 98s. Also, naturally aspirated versions had 6 HP more (or so) in 98 than in 99 (I think in 00 they went back to 168, though). Also, 98s lack a cupholder in the rear center armrest. There are probably other minor differences, but these are the ones I am aware of. Oh, yes, the side turn signals in the fenders are not standard in 98. I had to install mine myself.

    Cheers.

        Check the vacuum hose for the cruise vacuum pump. It mounts under the battery tray, and the hose goes from the pump to the actuator at the gas pedal. It runs along the left fender liner behind the battery, and usually breaks where it curves around behind the battery. Just cut out the damaged part and splice with vacuum hose.
