Racing catalytic convertors . . . 850

In my research for an exhaust upgrade, I have noticed that some systems offer racing catalytic convertors.

What are the differences between racing catalytic convertors and regular catalytic convertors?

    Re: Racing catalytic convertors . . . 850

    Difference is usually 2-fold:

    - Different 'core' material

    - Better flow characteristics

The core material in race-cats is usually a metal-based carrier material, instead of the ceramic element in a regular cat. The metal 'carrier' has a much bigger resistance to physical damage than the (brittle) ceramic element in a regular cat.

The metal carrier can also be shaped to be less restrictive to the exhaust gas flow, but still give a good working cat.

Of course the question is: why aren't they used as standard? This is usually because the metal-core race cats are (much) more expensive on a wholesale basis. Some manufacturers do use them, but usually only on high-end cars. It's pretty much the same story with stainless-steel vs. mild steel exhausts..

    Bye, Arno.

      Much appreciated.

While shopping for an exhaust upgrade, I have noticed that some downpipes come with racing cats. These cats seem to be MUCH more expensive. So I wanted to make sure I was getting my money's worth.
