People in the Toronto area . . . ALL

Is anyone on this board in the Toronto and surrounding area? i.e. Scarborough, Vaughn, York Region, Milton Region, etc.

I am looking for modified Volvo's that are looking for races. During the late spring and summer, there are races held at certain strips held Friday and Saturday nights. Race crowds usually start building at 11pm-12am. Races typically start at 1-2am.

There are usually HUGE turn outs every fri and sat night. Literally around 150 people with about 50 cars turn up all looking for races or to watch races. 1/4 mile times run the gamet (sp?) everything from stock 18 seconds to 10 sec beasts.

Gorgeous cars come regularly come up to run incredible 1/4s with awesome burn outs as well.

I have personally seen 900hp mustangs, 750hp RX-7's, 600hp civics, modified S4's, nitrous fed VW's, mugen modified S2000's, as well as nearly bone stock Hyudai's, and 3 cylinder sprints.

There's nothing like watching a Volvo 850 rock a type R. Or an RX-7 toy with mustangs.

I have already found 2 more Volvo 850 drivers in the area that are interested. I have also recruited a number of Mercedes drivers that are rushing to get their Kompressors ready to roll.

If interested, please contact me through e-mail. sin_liew@hotmail.com

STRIPS!?!?!?! There are NO strips open that late. I think what you're trying to draw attendance for is "illegal street racing" if I'm not mistaken. Sorry, I've got better things to do with my time than getting arrested, ticketed, killed or my Volvo(s) damaged.

Cayuga, St. Thomas, Grand Bend, Shannonville. I'll see you there if you want to do it legally.

You are correct that we do not use drag strips. Rather, we use strips of road in industrial areas, unassumed roads, etc, all away from where anyone would wander.

Don't get me wrong. I hate people that race on city streets with other cars, and even worse pedestrians. However, I see no problem with people racing in areas in the city on roads not used at those times of the day.

And don't worry, people with your attitude aren't welcome to these races.

And yes, I will be at one or more of these drag strips this summer. However, it will be in association with my modification shop. Ever heard of the organization DSM? Well Magnus Motorsports, the mod shop I am associated with and will represent this summer, runs events at those mentioned strips a couple times each summer. They also run pre-race parties the night before, usually at DV8 night club.

These events are usually run in the form of Quick 8 (heads up) with bracket classes. There are also auto sound competitions as well as presentation competitions.

If you are interested in running me and other Magnus Motorsports cars as well as a plethora of other cars, you are welcome. If you'd like, I will keep you informed.

So "illegal street racing" is what you're STILL talking about no matter HOW you justify it. Guess that A&E program really sucked you in last year eh?

        > Don't get me wrong. I hate people that race on city streets with

        > other cars, and even worse pedestrians.

So you're racing alone then? I thought it took two to drag? How well protected are the spectators? Concrete retaining walls anywhere? Didn't think so. EMS services present? Fire department?

        > However, I see no problem

I'm sure it's great for you getting your kicks and all but what you're doing is STILL illegal no matter how you try to justify it and God forbid an accident occurs.

        > And don't worry, people with your attitude aren't welcome to these

Don't worry. You'd never even know I was there if I did attend anyways.

So, let me get this straight. You claim to be a class A-1 Volvo enthusiast but you hang around with ricers? Eclipse/Talon/Laser and a smattering of RX-7s and such? Great!!

        > Well Magnus Motorsports, the mod shop

        > I am associated with and will represent this summer, runs events at

        > those mentioned strips a couple times each summer.

So Magnus Motorsports, a supposedly reputable business, actually promotes the delinquency of the events in which you claim to participate?

        > They also run

        > pre-race parties the night before, usually at DV8 night club.

Great. Nothing like the reactions times of a driver who is already worried about getting nailed by the cops. Now he's got a really ugly hangover too! Yup, that'll be some concentration effort on his part.

        > These events are usually run in the form of Quick 8 (heads up) with

Thanks, but I'll be at the NHRA sanctioned drag strip doing it legally.

Re: People in the Toronto area . . . ALL

Actually, I was involved with many of the guys on that show and was even around for some of the filming. The "star" of the program is nothing compared to what his shop puts out. The skinny guy with glasses is an incredible technician. I know him personally and his work was insulted by the cars featured on that program.

Safe is relative. If you wouldn't feel safe in that environment, then that's fine. But many of us do feel that it is safe. I have been going almost every fri and sat night for a couple years now. And the only thing I have ever seen is people blowing engines and trannies pushing their cars too hard. No one has ever come close to having an accident yet. I'm not saying that it isn't going to happen, but I trust the driving skills of these drivers far more then to your everyday driver.

And I never said it was legal. No where in my posts did I say anything was legal. Do you do everything legally? Have you ever done anything illegal? Have you ever sped? How 'bout made a lane change without signalling? Ran an amber light? Get the picture? So don't play all high and mighty with me.

You're right, I'd never know if you were there if you were there. But if you opened your mouth and spoke your thoughts, we would. If you walked around keeping your mouth shut, you wouldn't even know where the race was being held. People don't just tell anyone where the races are going to be. And you can try to follow us, but we take many different routes. Even 5 police cars can't figure out where we're going. What makes you think you could? It's one thing to see us at the meeting spot, it's another to actually make it to the races.

"So, let me get this straight. You claim to be a class A-1 Volvo enthusiast but you hang around with ricers? Eclipse/Talon/Laser and a smattering of RX-7s and such? Great!!"

I didn't know being a "class A-1 Volvo enthusiast" meant I couldn't admire the performance of other cars. Gee, I didn't know being a "class A-1 Volvo enthusiast" meant I had to be a snob. Thanks for the info. Do all of your friends drive Volvos? Uh oh, better get rid of them, they don't drive Volvos. Can't let that happen right? I promise, I'll work on my snobbery and work on having less contact with those lowly "Eclipse/Talon/Laser and a smattering of RX-7s and such." Give me a break!

"So Magnus Motorsports, a supposedly reputable business, actually promotes the delinquency of the events in which you claim to participate?"

Gotta work on your reading skills there buddy. Magnus runs events at drag strips such as St. Thomas dragway. Their site even states that they outright do not promote illegal drag racing. They can't help it if their customers use the strips of road in obscure areas to test their machines.

"Great. Nothing like the reactions times of a driver who is already worried about getting nailed by the cops. Now he's got a really ugly hangover too! Yup, that'll be some concentration effort on his part."

Once again, work on the reading skills. The pre-race party is for the St. Thomas event, which is legal. So why would we have to run form the cops? And drivers don't get smashed. They dance, chat with the hunnies, and talk trash about who they're going to beat the next day. Yes, some people get smashed, but not those that are going to the race the next day. Those that get smashed, get left behind. And everyone wants to win.

"Thanks, but I'll be at the NHRA sanctioned drag strip doing it legally."

Good. And I'll be at the NIRA sanctioned drag strips, doing it legally as well.

I'd love to continue this debate with you, but you've got to stop the logical fallacy building a straw-man.

I trust you're referring to Mike P. and not the dipstick with the three wannabe Mazdas?? RX-7 - ka-pow on the dyno! Miata that barely breaks into the 14s and that gawdawful 323 POS! I heard he also lives with his parents but that's another story.

Problem isn't with their skills. It's with their testosterone and adrenaline clouding their driving skills.

            > And I never said it was legal. No where in my posts did I say

You don't go to jail for speeding or running amber lights. Racing will get you a minimum of 6 points, automatic 24 hour suspension, vehicle impound and that's just the minimum. You should expect to be spending the night in a local concrete hotel.

Right. I guess a couple dozen patrol cars linked via motorola and computers and the addition of a police helicopter can't figure out what's going on either?

              Actually . . . ALL

Actually, no. I am a friend of the mechanic. His shop has some of the fastest cars in Canada. I met that guy with the Mazda's one night at a race. He was driving a stock 2000 Mazda Millenia S. Some of the Talon/Eclipses that come out of his shop are ridiculously fast. Many are in the 9's and 10's.

Actually, your reading of the penalties for racing are inaccurate. I had a friend who was caught racing. He was written a ticket for racing, illegal lane change and 120km/h in a 60km/h. The cop gave him a hard time, but left him with the three tickets and a mandatory appointment with a justice of the peace. He fought the ticket in court and won. But, his licence was not automatically suspended for 24 hours and his vehicle was not impounded.

Don't get me wrong. Some times, we get to what appears to be a sweet stretch, and as everyone's getting lined up and races are being shaken down, cops roll in. There have been times when 10 cars appear out of no where and start "chasing" us out. Heck, I've been spotlighted by helicopters a couple times. I say chasing because to be totally honest, a number of these cars can easily outrun the special chase cars i.e. Camaro Z28 SS police issue a.k.a. the Interceptor.

So some nights, we spend hours just trying to get to a strip without being hassled. While other nights, there's 3-5 hours of incredible racing. Everything from Honda/Acura's, to BMW's, to Mercedes Benz's, to Mitsu's, to Mazda's, to Volvo's, to Hyudai's, to Cadillac's, to Ford's, to Chevy's, to Toyota's, to Audi's, to VW's, to Subaru's, etc. On some good nights, you will see all of these makes and more racing for hours on end. There are burn outs, victory donuts, motorbike racing, and some fine female action as well.

But the majority of the time, it's great racing for a couple hours, getting chased out, meeting up at another on the fly meeting place, and then another strip for a couple hours.

It isn't rare for the sun to start coming up on my way home for the night. Ah, those sweet summer nights and mornings, the smell of burn outs, the sound of highly tuned engines, I can't wait.

In all honesty, I am interested in how modified Volvo's are doing. Would you be interested in doing a little bracket racing at St. Thomas this summer? I want to see what your Volvo is capable of.
