Ignition Replacement - How difficult? 850 1995

My micro-switch has been replaced, and the key has to be jiggled to get the car out of park and for the headlights to come on, so I've concluded that the problem is in the ignition switch in the steering column. How difficult is this? On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 - easy as changing a light bulb in your house, 10 - only attempt by a certified Volvo mechanic with specialized tools.

I'm no expert, but I will attempt some things on my own, I've changed water pumps, brake pads and alternators on other cars, but I sometimes have to make several trips to the parts store to get it right. Once, while repairing frayed wiring at the alternator, I had to replace the main fuse 3 times before I realized I needed to put in an rubber washer to insulate the connection from the alternator body.

Re: Ignition Replacement - How difficult? 850 1995

Martin,

I replaced mine too by myself. It was a 2/3 job. You do need the LONG torx screwdrivers (2 different sizes, but I forgot the sizes) to remove the steering column cover. Then remove the ignition swtich using the philip screwdriver. Installation is in reverse order.
