1998 V70 Crankshaft Pulley Nut Direction??? V70-XC70

Is the Camshaft Pulley Nut removal and normal turn counterclockwise or is it clockwise to remove?

    There is no need to remove the pulley to replace the belt. Lefty is loosey, normal thread pattern. You will need an impact drill to get the nut off and use the rope trick to get the proper torque when putting it back on.

    If after removing the small dirt shield you cannot get the old belt off, just cut the old belt. The new one will slide right in.

      Klaus,

      Ok, I'll cut the belt, but since I the old one still on I'm gonna go ahead and just set it up and make sure I have nothing stopping the pistons from moving freely once it is set. Once set I'll check compression. If I get compression in all cylinders, then I may go ahead and start it just to verify that it does indeed work.

      If it does, then I'll go back and cut the belt and put the new one on. I hope it slides in as it looks tight in there.

        Getting Tbelt off V70-XC70

        You have a good plan.

        Yes, the clearance is tight around the crank and the belt can be hard to get off. If you are lucky and the planets are aligned, the belt will come off the crank with about 5 minutes of fiddling. Give yourself 15 minutes and then cut off the belt.

        The belt will slide in quite easily, you don't have to mess with the 90 degree metal lip on the way back on.

        Good luck on the compression. BTW, your numbers will be low because the engine is cold and the rings are without oil, but the numbers should be consistant on all 5 cylinders.

          Getting Tbelt off V70-XC70

          "It's Dead Jim"...

          Got everything lined up and did the compression test as I talked about.

          The numbers from passengers side to drivers side were:

          1 - 0 PSI,
          2 - 0 PSI,
          3 - 30 PSI,
          4 - 0 PSI,
          5 - 0 PSI.

          Gonna start tearing the engine down to get the head out. Plan to keep the cams, and hydraulic lifters from the current head.

          Next warm day I'm heading to the local PNP and yanking off the first one I see of that year and model. Then I'll have it cleaned up and hopefully there won't be anything wrong with so that I can just slam it back down. I know I'm oversimplifying this, but you get the gist of it.

          I've found a good post on matthew volvo site that outlines the tear down a build up so its just time now.

            Bummer. The cams and lifters should still be good. When you take the head off, put a zip tie in the exhaust cam sprocket hole. You don't want to get them mixed up!!
