Servicing transmission on 2006 XC90 V8 XC90 2006

I purchased this car last year,2012. I wanted to have my transmission serviced, since it has 140,000 miles. I have the service book that indicates Volvo serviced the car up to 105,000 miles. When I called my local Volvo dealer to set an appointment, he declined. He said that due to the number of miles on the car it wasn't in my best interest to do this. He went on to say that it would more harm than good, something about floating particles and sticky fluid. I was taken back by this answer. I've always been one to change fluids and oils to prevent problems. If anyone out there has any thoughts on this I'd sure like to hear from you.

This sounds funny and sad at the same time.

I wonder how Hyundai expects to get two hundred thousand mile on their power trains without you coming in for service to help pay for warranty claims?

Oh... I get it; they will sell another car when it breaks...the same as Volvo! Service does not work in either case!

A many of horses have died out on the trails!

The dealer probably checked your service records and found that the tranny had never been serviced.

His response is not unusual for ANY high mileage transmission from what I have read.

I might try the slow change process with my 855R - that's how they maintained 740s.

I suspect that the dealer does not want to be held accountable if the transmission fails post-service. I would recommend a gradual approach-- just drain the sump and refill by the same amount with the appropriate fluid. Do this several times to slowly replace the fluid, which is definitely past its prime. I would not power flush the transmission-- there is an element of real risk with those systems in older transmissions.

Good luck!

yea little at a time.4-5 quarts maybe
also check the coolant for any contamination, ive seen the radiator
core fail on one of these and kill the trans, if it is leaking you will see a
'strawberry slushy' residue in the coolant resevoir-if this is the case its likely too late
good luck!

and yes most dealers or shops ive been involved with wont touch a transmission after 100k

In other words, at only 140,000 miles the patient is terminal? Let's just drive it until it croaks?

Maybe there's something to his reasoning, but personally, if it were me, I'd service it like I recently did to my 160,000 mile V70. But that's just the way I am. Don't base your decision on what I did.
