Oil consumption question 850 1995

Okay, my 95 855 NA with about 220k on it uses very little oil when driving around town. Which happens to be most of my driving. Every few months I do a long highway trip into the N.H. mountains to my cabin. Now this is where the story gets a little strange...Just returned yesterday from a N.H. trip. I've noticed that the engine on the trip up used some oil but on the return trip it didn't seem to use any??

Overall consumption is probably a quart every 2500-3000 miles which I think is pretty good for its number of miles. I also remember my high mileage 240 doing the same sort of thing. Using little oil in town then consuming oil on long highway trips. Is this typical of Volvo engines? Strange indeed! Maybe the rings become unstuck and more efficient after a good, long highway trip? Thoughts anyone?

Ty,
J

    Oil consumption question 850 1995

Those are good oil consumption figures for that mileage. On our engines, it is usually the valve seals that wear, so at around 200K the consumption goes up. Especially when the manifold vacuum is high and the engine is relatively cool (such as driving short distances around town).

Long highway trips at 2000+ rpm are actually good for the engine. The valves get turned in their seats, the carbon burns off, the extra warm oil disolves sludge, the very hot oil vapors clean the PCV system, and everything works better for a while.

It is not the brand of engine oil that matters, it is how you treat the engine. It needs to be exercised.

When the consumption gets to 1 quart/1,000 miles or worse, it is too late for the engine to 'fix' itself on a road trip. Too much damage has been done and a good mechanical repair is the only solution.

Moral: Drive it like you hate it!

Count your blessings. Our '95 is now using about a quart every 800 miles.

Crazy consumption, but the funny thing is that it doesn't drip and unless it is sitting idling for 10 minutes, you'd never think it burns any. Even the plugs look ok.

I'm thinking that someone siphons it out during the week.

Consider doing an Auto-Rx treatment. A good, long highway trip wouldn't hurt either.

Actually, I was considering Auto-Rx. I've got nothing to lose.

As for a trip, this car is run up and down I-84 about 90 miles / 70 mph daily.
Prior to us getting it, it generally didn't get a whole lot of highway exercise. I knew that when we got it. I'm resigned to living with the excessive consumption until I find the time and money for a replacement engine or a proper rebuild for this one.

While I don't have a technical answer or guess I'd imagine the relatively higher mileage is a factor, what oil are you using?

My 98XC was using about 1 qt over 5k miles, with about 215k on the clock. I was using Mobil 1 0w40.

Conventional oil - 0w40. I'm doing my second AutoRX treatment and that requires conventional oil. After this treatment, I'll switch to synthetic then I'll see if the consumption goes down any...

Car runs great though. Good chance the engine could do 300k+...:)
