axle/cv joint V70-XC70

I have a 1998 V70. I am getting a distinct hum/whirring from the front right of the car. It changes pitch related to speed or when I turn the steering wheel while driving the car. Is this a CV Joint or axle or a front wheel bearing? What parts are needed?
Thanks, John 91 245 SE, 98 V70, 07 V50

CV joints are easy to inspect. If the boot is intact, all should be well.

To inspect the bearing, jack up the wheel and see if it can move ever so slightly when push/pulling at the 6 and 12 o'clock position. From your description, it is probably a bearing. It should sound like a snow tire on dry pavement.

The bearing is replaced by replacing the hub. The torx screws do get very rusty, so be careful not to strip them. You will also need a new axle nut.

"Snow tire on drive pavement" What a great description. That is exactly how it sounds. I wondered about the bearing but was under the impression that they rarely go out. Thanks for your input, I will pursue that possibility more closely.

if gets worse when turning wheel to left, thus loading the right side, likely the front right bearing hub...no separate bearing, you get bearing/hub as complete unit....not a terribly hard repair....matthews volvo has good writeup with pics...

Yes it does get worse when I turn to the left. Good call. Thanks for your time.
