ID-ing My Auto Transmission and High Mileage Fluid Flush Strategy V70-XC70 1998

I have a '98 V70 with automatic, and I'm planning to do a fluid flush. It's never been flushed, but I'm having some problems (intermittent slipping, and won't shift out of first).

I thought I would change out two quarts, to kind of "ease" into the new fluid, then wait a week or so, and do a complete flush.

I'm about 99% sure I've got the 4 speed (Owners manual says so) but I keep reading that some 5 speeds crept in in 1998.

Shifter plate is L 3 D N R P

Can anyone give me the 1998 VIN codes for transmissions? I found Klaus's post listing VIN codes (below) but no mention of trannys.

Also, if anyone has any comments about this "two quarts" strategy I would appreciate it.

Hello, I would flush as described here and else where, as stated drain box and replace, I would not run engine to inter mix but flush from the radiator OUT line, one gallon at a time, replace with same amount via dip stick tube and flush again,, you can see the NEW fluid .. I bought a case of below,(for my V70 2003) I do not know the specs for your model, in six months you 'could' drain the box again?
Do a search on flushing the FWD on this site

Nothing in the VIN to suggest different auto trans. You have a 4 speed, period.

I suggest doing the 'dump and fill', on a cold engine and tranny that has sat overnight. Buy some aluminum crush washers, same size as the engine oil drain. Then drain the tranny sump with the engine off! Measure the amount that came out -- or mark the level on the dipstick prior to the drain (it will appear to be overfull by a lot) -- and refill with fresh ATF. It will be about 3-4 quarts.

After starting the car, row through the gears once, put it in park and check the level again with the engine running. Use the cold side of the dipstick.

Great, thanks Klaus. This tranny uses Dex/Merc right? They have Castrol "Transmax" Dex/Merc at my auto parts store. It doesn't say it replaces Dex II/Dex III, but this seems to be sort of implied. (It does say it *doesn't* replace a bunch of specialty Dex fluids, like Dex VI, Dex L-something, etc).

ATF Dexron IIE/ III and Mercon. Don't get too penny wise and pound foolish, a couple of cents more per quart is no big deal.

Of course, Mobile 1 ATF is fully synthetic and DEXIII/Mercon compatable but quite costly and probably overkill.
