Airbox Thermostat - Vacuum Operated 850 1997


OK, this 850 NA sucks gas, so first thing I check after searching around is the airbox thermostat. Mine is stuck in partially hot, partially cold with no vacuum, but with vacuum it's full hot. Can't find much info on this version, thought I would take apart a put in a dowel or something to keep flap on full cold air. Problem is can't get it apart, even though it looks like it comes apart. Any suggestions?

For the time being I'll leave the hot air duct from exhaust manifold off and disconnect/plug vac line to the airbox vacuum motor. What a pain....

Your computer still needs to know what the air temperature is to regulate the fuel/air mixture.

If you think that the warm air flap in the airbox died, force the flap closed. You and everybody else do not need heated air coming into the engine.

Swapping air boxes from a turbo is not reccomended and a waste of money/effort.

OK, was able to get it apart, but no obvious way to block the flapper into the "cold" position. However, I was able to simply remove the flapper and reassemble. At the moment I do not have the hot side blocked, but I did not put the exhaust heat pipe to the airbox back. Maybe the fix is to make a wood dowel for the hot side and fasten it in place permanently.

Checked O2 sensor and operating temperature with my code reader while in the garage. Coolant sits at 195 - 200, O2 sensor voltage varies rapidly as I blip the throttle, seems good to me. A test drive indicates overall better running, engine pulls surprisingly quite a bit better. Filled tank, we'll see what kind of mileage she delivers over the next couple of weeks.

I just came home with the lower portion of a turbo air cleaner box and its air feed tube from the radiator area. I plan to remove the pre heated hose completely. As well as the vacuum line from the tree.

Great tip, simply get bottom half from a turbo car. Just realized I probably have a small vac leak as I have not reconnected the vac line as the rubber elbow disintegrated. Thanks. Mike

Bottom of the air box WITH the intake. Right now, just get a plug for the vacuum tree so you can remove the vacuum line from the current airbox.

The 1995 turbo version I got does not have a SAS air port, but that is OK as I am going to delete the SAS anyway.

On my 98 V70 NA I cut the metal cylindrical thermostat in half to remove it. Then I set the door at the full cold position and locked it with a couple of small sheet metal screws.

I like the idea of using a turbo lower air box and inlet hose.

I blocked my hot side with some doubled over foil, and screwed the hot air hose back on. -also noticed some better response.
