Which Redline Transmission Fluid to use? V70-XC70 98 AWD

Is there a particular grade of manual transmission oil I need to buy when replacing current tranny fluid? I know Redline is reputed to be the best so I'd like to try it.

Redline is not really the best....but I am biased.

Volvo recommends their own fluid for the M56 tranny and does specify a generic replacement. I would like to know what this fuild is.

This fluid is oil for the manual gearbox. I would go with either Volvo or other synthetic gear oil.

Yes I understand - manual gearbox. That's why I wrote M56. So what do you mean by "synthetic gear oil"? I really don't think it's a regular synthetic gear oil......

I thought gear oils is used in manual trannies. I may be wrong, do you know better?

Not always. For example the Volvo M46 and M47 manual transmissions require Type F ATF.

Volvo requires their special oil for the M56 used in the 850 and 60/70 series cars. Read your manual for the Volvo part number. I suspect this oil IS a synthetic light gear oil, but it is not a typical gear oil.
