93 850 GLT Crank- no start 850

I went to help a friend with her little red 93 850. She shut it down in a parking lot, came out and only cranked but wouldn't start. I told her to get it home and I would come look at it. When I got there, I turned the key on to listen for the fuel pump and heard a loud whirring/grinding noise in the vicinity of the battery but lower. Is there an air pump on the 93? I have an 97 with an air pump problem but it won't keep it from starting? I can't for the life of me think what this noise is coming from. I checked for fuel pressure in the rail...check, I checked for spark at a plug...check. I checked codes in box A and got 1-1-1 for both tests. I am stumped.

    Crank no start 850

Did you verify a bright spark at the plugs?
a bad coil wire or distributor cap/rotor comes to mind.

    How's the compression?

    Bill

      Crank no start 850

      Sorry Bill,
I got off of this thread due to not being able to work on the little red 850 anymore due to time and work. I did not check compression and the spark was not very bright but visible in daylight sun.

It's monday, probably too late, but if there is an air pump on the 1993, there will be a hose from the top of the airbox to the pump below the battery. But, it shouldn't be making noise when the key is in posII - only the idle control motor at the throttle body.

If the engine seems to crank rapidly, like without compression, then crank it for at least 30 seconds to eliminate lawnmower syndrome.

Are the spark plugs wet? Is the battery at full charge?

Thank you Klaus, I will put a full charge on the batt. This noise when the key is on (not cranking) is the strangest noise I have ever heard. It is not the idle motor or the starter or any fan...i just can't put my finger on it. It is a course whirring noise...fairly loud. I tried to probe around to find the source to no avail. My 95 850 gets the "lawnmower syndrome" and always pulls out of it and starts after extended cranking.

Hmmm. The cruise control vacuum pump is under the battery tray...

Good thinkin Klaus! I will check that tomorrow. Maybe it is stuck on. I wish the car was closer, I would go check it now.

Just to follow up...I spent some time with the car today. The battery was top charged and still no start. I checked the rotor/cap and found normal carbon build up but not excessive. wanted to swap my MAF for hers but no-go...hers 93, mine 97. It is different. Took the plugs out. They were fuel soaked. Torched them dry and tried to start...no joy. I'm not sure where to go next.

If the spark plugs are soaked, you need to start from scratch as there is fuel. The coil could be bad or the ground wire could be rusted out. I don't like the fact that there is a whirring noise when the key is in posII. The coil is the same as your 1997.

If the MAF is dead, unplugging it before you try to start it will do no harm as it should idle fine. Make sure to check the diagnostic boxes, ports A-2 and A-6 come to mind. A bad cam position sensor will cause a no start also.

The 93 has no air pump!

If she drove the car short distance, probably has the lawn mower syndrome.

It could also the starter, take a long metal bar and top on the solenoid.

Thank you for your post. I will try the solenoid tapping. I didn't think the solenoid would whir or make noise like that unless the key was in the start position. I am also going to try to top charge the batt and crank it for a long time to give the lawnmower syndrome a run.

        Thanks again!

Just for shits and giggles. Why don't you try tapping on the cam position sensor or get one from a junk yard if you can. Is this sudden or was there difficulty starting the car earlier. Typically, the CPS gives you some warning time before it finally stops working. Good Luck

Eddie G and Klaus, Thanks for the input. I was over there on Friday and checked a few things...still no start. I think the cam position sensor has been changed before (yellow paint crayon on it from a pick-n-pull) I tapped the CPS and cleaned the connector...no joy. I took the plugs out, dried and cleaned, put back in ...no joy. I went to swap the MAF with mine but non compatible with my 97. The problem now is...no time. If it were my car here or if I had more time I would keep going until I fixed it. She is going to take it somewhere (this kills me cause that is a dangerous thing to do with a 93 850) unless she finds a trustworthy mech. I really wanted to get it going for her.

At any rate, thank you all for your help! I'll post when I find out what was wrong.

              Mark,

I had the same problem with my 94 n/a. After pretty much everything you did and then some, I dropped in an ECU I picked up on ebay. I verified I had fuel and spark and after hitting my head against the wall for a month I went the ECU route.
Here is a link you should look at:

              http://www.volvoclub.org.uk/tech/service/850/TroubleshootingWithCodes-NonTurbo.pdf

Go to page 6 and do the self diagnostics. The engine will run through tests with the cooling fan, fuel injectors, air pump etc. If your system does NOT complete all the self tests, you have a bad ECU. Hope this helps.

If you replace the ECU makes sure the numbers match EXACT.

              Eddie G
