ECC 1998 V70 all fans un-responsive... V70-XC70

My wifes 1998 V70 does not allow the climate control fans nor the main blower to turn any longer.

So an initial question is where do I start? I know of two motors, one on either side of the main console, and apparently there is one under the dash on the passenger's side. However, I do not know what has died and need to find out soon as summer is quickly approaching.

Thanks to all who reply.

Regards,

Matt aka thebricktank

There is only one blower, behind the glove box. All of the air flow is directed by small vent motors.

Do the blinking lights of death come on whenevery you start the engine and blink about 20 times? That indicates a fault in the system.

Check the fuses first. If the blower does not respond, even in the fastest position, it could be the blower itself. There is a rehostat which can disrupt power supply to the blower, it regulates the variable speeds.

The passenger kick panel does not come off unless the glove box is removed first, exposing 3 T25 screws.

Replacing the blower is not difficult, same for the rehostat. Just the cost is a bit hard to swallow.

If you go to a pick&pull for the parts, 850/70 1994-2000 have the same specs for the ECC. You will need a T25, a 14mm socket with a 2 inch extension for the knee bolster, and a pick or very small screwdriver to take off the glove box straps.

Klaus,

Checked the fuse and it was fine.

Took out the glove box, knee bolster and air bag bolster.

I then whacked the fan a couple of times and it roared to life.

a few minutes of tinkering and I was able to determine that it is the fan's connector that is bad or not making proper contact with the inside of the motor itself. I was able to use a small shim to wedge the connector in such a position that it now works, for now.

I'll have to get to the pnp in a couple of weeks and yank one out so that I can make repairs to mine while I still have one being used in the car.

As far as blinking lights, yes I have them, but I have no idea what is causing them. I'm thinking that the two variable speed motors on the sides are going or are gone.

Is there a way to determine for a 1998 V70 what the blinking lights mean?

Thanks in advance,

Matt

So the fan finally died. Ordered a new one from FCP and put it in this morning.

It works just fine and well all my blinking lights are now gone on my ECC.

Wish I had known that sooner as I would have replace the fan sooner.

Any ways, all is now well again with my wife's car.

Yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When you go to the P&P to get a blower, also get a resistor and a replacement cabin temp sensor (the one in the switch row next to the ECC unit).

My 1998 had a dirty temp sensor that caused the blinking light. Pull out the radio and let it rest on the shift knob, pull out the ECC unit and unplug that, put the radio back in. Reach behind the dash and push in the plastic latches on the long tube nest to the little grill you see on the front side and pull the sensor straight out. Do not unplug the sensor until it is out of the dash, you don't want the wires to become unreachable. Note how the wires are plugged in, the 'angle' needs to be the same when the sensor is put back in the dash.

Clean the sensor with a toothpick and blow out the dust. Be very careful with the small copper tube inside, if you break it, it is toast!.

Another cause of the blinking lights is the recycle vent motor. Just turn the recycle switch on and wait 30 seconds, then turn it off. Repeat several times to get the grease moving again.

Only a dealer or scanner that handles Volvo codes will read and reset ECC codes.

If your one and only fan motor is running, and you are making cold air, then the chances are that your blinking lights are a sign of one or more malfunctioning dampers. Damper repairs require a significant disassembly of the fascia, so I have lived with my blinking lights for years.

One day in the future, when your AC evaporator fails, that replacement will necessitate a major disassembly of front cockpit of your car. That is the time to do all damper repairs.

Sounds electrical to me. Have you checked the fuse? Check the wiring too. I don't know if one relay controls all fans, but I'm sure someone else does.
