Stainless steel exhaust - 850 and S/V70's etc. 850

Does anyone know what year Volvo stopped making stainless steel mufflers?

Was it 1998, 2000 or later?

Ty,
Jim

this isn't for stainless, but I have painted several ordinary exhausts with Rustoleum zinc rich cold galvanizing compound, using both a large spray can and a quart can.It is designed for repainting chain link fences primarily, and is heat resistant. I'm not a chemist, but I understand steel want's to go back to nature as red iron ore, which is very similar to rust, and moisture promotes the chemical reaction that causes that. HOWEVER, moisture will react with zinc first and eat the zinc before the steel. The spray can with a straw is to aim up the pipe or hard to reach seams, the quart is to paint a thick coat everywhere else. There are other brands of similar paint, but rustoleum is everywhere.Just FYI.

A lot of mufflers and pipes on today's cars last a long time. Especially original. I thought the pipes were stainless and the mufflers were aluminized.

I didn't know they stopped. These OEM things last forever. My 1998 AWD did show signs of external rust, so I painted them with regular rustoleum flat black.

Yup, still have my complete OEM exhaust on my 855 at 18 years and 222k miles. Only the tailpipe and rear hanger have rusted out. Gotta love stainless steel exhausts...:)

FWIW - On my Dad's former car, a 2001 V70, the front muffler rusted out after 9 years so at a minimum the front muffler wasn't stainless..
