engine noise under full throttle V70-XC70 1998

I have driven my 98 and other 98's and 99's xc and found the engine noise in the later cars to be much less obtrusive. I assume a design change was made. Does anyone know what it is and can it be retrofitted to the 98?

    Hi Bill,

    An item you might want to take a look at is the exhaust system. I have had in the past where a small leak had developed around the connection between the exhaust pipe and the header manifold. At idle you could not hear the leak, but when you were under a full load it sounded like a truck.

    Hi Bill,

    Volvo did an Engine design improvement change between the 1998 and 1999. The 1999 engine has distributor-less ignition , improved the timing belt access, improved the turbo oil and cooling line connections and went to a paper oil filer. There may be some other minor changes that I am not aware of. Other then that the engines are the same. As for your request I am not aware of any improvement that can be done to quite down the Engine noise.
