How to: remove S70 rear speaker covers S70 2000

Hi-

I am supposed to help a friend replace the rear speakers on his 2000 S70. Most cars that I have worked on over the years have rear shelf speakers that are bolted in from below. It seems like the S70 requires the removal of the speaker covers, and I am unable to figure out how to remove them. If you have any information, please let me know since I don't want to break anything in the process. Thanks!

-Rob

Re: How to: remove S70 rear speaker covers S70 2000

Rob, As was mentioned a few days ago on this forum, the OEM speakers on our cars seem to have 8 ohm impedence. Just wondering which speakers your friend chose for the hat shelf? I am cosidering upgrading those too, but am stumped by the 4 ohm/8 ohm dilema. Crutchfield recomendations from their website are all 4 ohm as are most car speakers out there. Please let the board know what the deale is with that after you help your friend.

TIA

Re: How to: remove S70 rear speaker covers S70 2000

In reply to the 4ohm/8ohm dilemma, I recently changed all my speakers and went with all 4 ohm which I believe are more standard for car audio.

The technician that changed my rear 8 ohm speakers explained to me that perhaps Volvo put 8 ohm speakers back there was so that you can crank up the sound and not blow those paper cone speakers. The higher the resistance, the less power the speaker actually gets. I've had to try to remember my grade 11 physics - ohm's law.

One reason why you would use 8 ohm speakers and most of the time, it's for subs, it is because if you have a single power source (amplifier) and you want to hook up 2 subs, you could connect 2 subs at 8 ohms in parallel and the amp would see a 4 ohm resistance. This way, you could connect 2 subs with one amp.

One other question when doing all this is are you changing the head unit as well? Are you adding an amp? These are other factors to consider.

Re: How to: remove S70 rear speaker covers S70 2000

Rob,

The speaker grilles are attached to the parcel shelf. You're right that you have to remove the shelf to get to the screws holding in the speakers. It's easy.

1. Lower the seatbacks.

2. Remove the L and R seat back sides by pulling the top towards you to release the clip and then lift up to release from the bracket.

3. Remove the L and R quarter panel trim--it snaps off.

4. Lift up the front edge of the parcel shelf to release the clips and pull it towards you to release from the two rear retaining clips.

5. Hool the seatbelts our of your way.

Work carefully on reinstallation as the rear clips must line up with the slots in the cross brace for the shelf to fit correctly. Don't force it.

Good luck,

Bryan

Re: How to: remove S70 rear speaker covers 850 1996

Dan,

Here's a thought.

My dealer has the factory remote amp and will sell it to me "cheap" (@$500.US) since they dont' want to be stuck with it. It is 200 watts so it will boost the system by 100 watts.

I'll let you know if it is a good fix for better quality sound. I looked at speaker upgrades and could easily spend that much.

Interestingly, a guy at the local sound shop told me either to completely replace the system or go with the remote amp. His opinion is that the car's system (SC-816) is sufficient unless I'm prepared to spend over $2000. I'm NOT.
