New Volvo Owner Looking for Phoenix-Area Mechanic 850 97

A couple months as a Volvo owner. Very satisfied so far....

Any recommendations for a Volvo mechanic in Phoenix, Arizona, area? I need timing belt, change tranny fluid, maybe some other odds and ends. I checked old archives and found info on what to expect to pay but nothing on Phoenix area. I'm looking for a good independent shop for this vehicle to grow old with.

Thanks,

-DirkV

Re: New Volvo Owner Looking for Phoenix-Area Mechanic 850 97

Well I've been using Dave Rivera at The VoVo Shop on University Drive near 40th Street in Tempe for nearly 16 years now. Needless to say I know Dave (he is the owner) very well by now and would recommend him. I find him honest and straight with you. Once he sent me to the dealer instead of doing the work himself since he felt they would do the repair better there!

His shop is not very beautiful but he gets the job done right the first time and is very reasonable on his prices. I'm on my 5th Volvo now and he has serviced them all ('84 245 Turbo, '85 244 GL, '90 764 Turbo, '92 965, and my latest '96 855 TLA).

When I'm in the market for another car, I always have him do buyers inspection - the last two times he didn't charge me for it! I use what he had found to negate down the price on the '90 764 and rejected the purchase of a '94 855! Some would say that is self-serving for Dave to find as many problems as possible, but being quite particular about my cars I want him to be thorough. We will go over the list of needed repairs and only do those that need done now saving the other repairs for more appropriate times.

His drawbacks: small shop, sometimes it takes a couple of days for him to finish major repairs (I'm flexible about my time and prefer to have him take his time, other don't). He could be better on tracking down troublesome electrical problems - not his strong point.

He use to work for one of the Phoenix area Volvo dealerships many years ago and has been trained at the Volvo schools. He is the main reason I still drive Volvo's - the dealership experience would have made me a non-Volvo owner long ago if that were the only place to take a car!

He can be reached at 602-437-5707.
