Thermostat V70-XC70 2004

I noticed there is a wire connected to the thermostat housing. Can anyone tell me what it's doing? Perhaps sensing if the thermostat is open?

    there is two temp sensors on your motor, one your looking at and another one, one is for the computer and the other is the temp gage.
