1997 850 smells of fuel when tank is full. Found there is fuel on top of the fuel pump. It is damp, not soaked, but of course it doesn't take much to smell bad.

The hoses and rubber plugs seem dry and solid, there is only fuel in the area inside the lock ring (white/silverfish area inside black circle in photo).

I guess I need a gasket. Would it be a fuel pump gasket, like this, or something else?

I had same thing happen to my 855T, had to sit in back and stare at the fittings for while to see the gas leaking out of the fitting that attaches the return line to the pump/sender unit. The o-ring inside the fitting disintegrated. Volvo doesnt sell the fitting so I had to cut the plastic return line and attached a combo fitting that has a compression fitting/metal tubing [Advance auto had wide selection] and then run a short section of fuel line from there to the tank nipple. Mine was the low pressure line; you may not be so lucky.

can you tell me how to get the fuel lines disconnected from the pump? It seems like a compression fitting but I cannot get either one off. rather than force it and possibly turn a small problem into a big one I gave up.

Thanks for the idea about the o rings. Once I get it apart I will give those a look.

Does are like compression fittings, you need to press and pull the lips up.

Do a search under fuel filter replacement, same fittings at the pump.

You can practice by changing your fuel filter first or go to a u-pull!!!
