Snow chains for 205 55 16 850 1996

I'm sure there has been some discussion in the past regarding this, but since my last trip up in the mountains to go skiing resulted in my volvo having to get a push from an Audi and an Outback, I figured I should look into getting some chains for my car. My tire size is 205-55-16. Any thoughts/comments/ideas on what to get? I did a search and most of the posts that resulted were from 3 and 4 years ago. I would appreciate any help.

Thanks,

Matt

I agree that you should use snow tires instead of chains.

First of all, futzing around with chains under any conditions doesn't lend itself to fun on the slopes and I doubt if there is enough clearence under there.

Second, the width of your tires are for "dry" traction and you should take a lesson from rallye cars and (as suggested) use a narrower width for more PSI on the contact patch.

There has been lots of space wasted on the hottest/coolest flavor of the month snow tires and I doubt that you can tell much differance between them. If they get up the mountain who cares what you call them or what they cost.

I have a pair of 185-65 on steel wheels for the 96 850, which I throw on (20 min) the morning I need them. With the winter mode, tracs and a bit of skill you'll do well.

    Have fun.

Try 185 65/15 snow tires. They should help.
