Not just snow makes wheels vibrate ALL

So today I took off my steel rims/Nokian Hakka Q's. I was feeling a nice vibration at 75mph+, so I thought a rim might be bent or a balance weight thrown. Nope... I discovered a 1/8-1/4 inch deep layer of sand inside the rims!!! It was almost like cement and there was a whole lot of it on all the rims. This probably built up over the whole winter since my steel rims don't have much for holes to clean through. Now that I know this can happen it's nothing a quick power washer can't take care of, just be careful not to jet water into those drive shaft boots.

Why don't you remove the wheel before cleaning them?

Due to the nature of the jack, you can remove two wheels at a time. So do that, and then hose the rims clean off the car.

That's a bit drastic, especially in the winter. I think a power washer or even a good hose could take care of it if you aim through each hole.

Re: Not just snow makes wheels vibrate ALL

I don't like spraying water at brakes and sensors unless I have to.

Due to my style of driving and my liking for high performance tires, I like to rotate my tires atleast once if not twice between March and November. I've gotten really good at rotating tires quickly. I even clean off the hubs with a wire brush and inspect lug nuts, brake lines, pads, rotors etc, while doing the change. It just makes sure you know exactly what's going on with your car.

Depending on the amount of dirt on the wheels, spraying may not be enough. If it is enough to cause an unbalance in your wheel, I think it is only wise and preventative to remove the wheel and clean it.

Chacun son gout! To each his own.
