My '01 S60 T5 w/manual transmission has 177K on it and is making what sounds like wheel bearing rumble. What's the normal lifespan of bearings on this car? I've got hundreds of thousands of miles on RWD Volvos and have only replaced one rear bearing on a 240 so I don't have a lot of experience diagnosing FWD bearing noises. Tires are fairly new, new control arms and alignment. I don't get any change in sound when going around corners. Thanks.

FWIW - My 95 855 has had one front wheel bearing go in 225K. Other 3 are original. Went at @200K.

Wife`s 03 XC70 had rear whl bearings go south at close to 200K. Drivers side went first, passenger side went 3 months later.

About 176,000 miles? Probably a rear bearing which is more painful than the front for R&R. The independent rear suspension puts much more stress on the bearing than the solid axle cars.

Bearings are not cheap, they start at $70 and a dealer wants around $225. Tasca has OEM for less but you need to add shipping: http://www.tascaparts.com/parts/index.cfm?action=oePartSearch&siteid=213668&make=Volvo&year=&model=&submodel=&searchText=31329980&startRow=1&maxRow=10

You also need 4 new bolts which the OEM has.

Before you assume that the bearing is gone, verify it with a friendly mechanic.
