DIY clean the drain tubes 850

My project got washed today, first time since I bought it in October, 2012. The bird droppings and bugs had become part of the white paint.

The trunk drains were both clogged. I found a great tool to clean them out, a plumbers snake! I have a 1/4 inch diameter snake. I removed the entire snake out of the tool as the business end was too large and I needed to use the small end.

I pulled back the side panels, pulled off the drain line from the top hole. Then carefully pushed the snake down to the blockage, about where the line goes through the air vent at the bottom. A few turns and light pressure and dirt fell on to the driveway. Repeated for the other side. Then I flushed with a little water from my hose.

Have you thought of a good alternative to cleaning the forward drains on the sunroof: I do not even know where they exit on the bottom of the car!!!
I managed to clean the rear one's by removing the lines in the trunk and blowing some compress air. LOts of junk come out!!!

The front SR drains go down the A pillar and exit just in front of the door. Use a semi stiff wire or an electrical snake, I am not sure if the 1/4inch plumbers snake will be flexible enough. If you wait a day or two, I will try it on my 850. My SR drains are clean, so far.

I need to remove a lot of 'dirt' in the paint (clear coat over white) and am trying to figure out what to use before I put the wing back on the trunk. Regular paste wax doesn't work.

Can can probably used a mild rubbing compound and work your way into a medium if the less aggresive did not work. Always buff it with a good wax afterwards!!

          Speedy,

I tried a 3M scrub sponge. That worked but left little scratches which the buffing compound took out.

Easier method is to use BonAmi cleanser, it never scratches! Followed with a good paste wax and the white trunk now shines!!!

Klaus - If you pull the trunk side out and pull the hose, you will see the problem - the fitting at the bottom of the drain hose is just about the same size as the hose - they pinch the hose to push it in the fitting.

The drain will constantly clog if anything of any good size goes down it!

I checked the trunk drains every couple of weeks with a cup of water. I used a piece of high temp auto wire - the stiffness was just right. I was able to put a small bend on the end of the wire so that it would make that first corner. I kept the wire right in the trunk. I marked the length to the bottom fitting on it.

I considered enlarging the hole in the bottom fitting, but my wire worked so well that I was lazy.

Keep the trunk seal and where it lands clean - mine used to get debris in it - possibly from wind on the highway? - as this will keep the water out, especially if you park on a level place.

Indeed, this is a regular maintenance item. Like every few weeks for us.

Re. the trunk seal, ours has flattened over the years and will let rainwater in.
I haven't brought myself to purchase a new one yet.
