low whistling noise---a real puzzler! 850 1993

I have a strange low pitched noise coming from my na 93 850 5 spd with 163k. Remember blowing over the top of an empty pop bottle? Sounds like that. I think it comes from the back.

It is intermittent. Seems worse on a windy day, but not always.

It has a trailer hitch (makes noise w/hitch in place or not. Car is missing the end cap from the back of the drivers side rail.

Also seems to be a bit louder w/right turns, again--not always.

Also seems to have a sticky parking brake. Sometimes the right rear rotor/brake feels hotter. Sometimes not.

Car runs fine, the noise does not hurt performance. However, it has me a tad concerned and a bunch puzzled.

Thanks

Tom

Mine is a'96 850 and has a similar whistle from the front, directly in front of the driver or maybe to the left side. Difinitely wind/speed related and above 55 mph.

You might try l alook at the seal just above the windshield or the side view mirrors.

I had a 97 850 which had a very annoying whistle above 55 mph and one day in the car wash the rubber strip covering the windshield joint came off and the whistle disappeared. A couple of weeks later I reinstalled it with a bit of glue and the whistle returned

if the noise appears to be coming from the front, turn off the heater fan when it occures. the fan motors often make this type of noise.
