Fuel injector cleaners? 850 1995

I remember recently reading an article that mentioned something about keeping your fuel injectors clean and how it will give you a better running car that won't waste gas. Seeing that my car is closing in on 6 years and I don't recall any information in the owner's manual that includes servicing those fuel injectors, is there any preventative maintenance I can do? My 850 turbo has been cared for and well maintained and only runs on Chevron 92 or 94 gas. Are the cleaning agents present in the gas I pump sufficient? Or should I look into using some of that fuel injector cleaning stuff you see at the auto parts store? Will those cleaners do my car any harm if I use them from time to time to keep the injectors clean?

Check your spark plugs after using the cleaner 850 1995

Sometimes the cleaner will foul your spark plugs. If the cleaner breaks loose large particles they can sometimes end up jammed in the spark plugs.

Re: Fuel injector cleaners? 850 1995

derspi-

If you are experiencing symptoms (i.e. hard starting, intermittant engine miss) I have had the best results with BG 44K. Usually one can in a full tank- run it almost empty before refilling- does the trick. I use Texaco products in the appropriate octanes- and have NEVER had an injector or valve-carbon problem in ANY of my cars. The 44K makes NO CHANGE when I have tried a can- not in performance or fuel economy. If you run good fuel, you don't need a fuel injector cleaner. If you run crap through your car, the best cleaner may not help.

Re: Fuel injector cleaners? 850 1995

Thanks for the reply--much appreciated. Well, like I said, the car is kept in good shape and I only run Chevron gas and no, I have not experienced any of those symptoms/problems with my Volvo. But if it doesn't hurt, maybe I'll just stick a bottle of that BG 44K in (if I can find it in my area) just to sooth my conscience. But I'll definitely give that stuff a go on my dad's car--13 year old 300E, we know the injectors are a bit suspect but don't want to shell out big bucks to have them replaced.

Re: Fuel injector cleaners? 850 1995

I share your liking for BG, but it isn't sold to your average consumer.

The only access I have to it is buying it as a "tech" from the manager of parts at my local Volvo dealership.

He doesn't sell it to your average customer. You being a Volvo tech probably have easy access to it, but many won't be able to get it easily.

Re: Fuel injector cleaners? 850 1995

Sin and Dave, BG 44K is without question the best fuel additive on the market - It's just so darn hard to get - Kinda like a good woman. I don't like to recommend products but I would love to work for this company just to push this product because I think it's outstanding. Let me tell you, that stuff works - I use it in my 93 850 and my BMW 524 Turbo DIESEL. Just don't breathe the fumes - it's wicked! Money well spent.

I'm sure it isn't as bad as getting brake cleaner in your eye.

Here in No. VA it's available from most dealers' shops without any special arrangement. As a matter of fact, I got a can a month ago from a local gas station's shop - it was even cheaper there.

So COME ON DOWN! (If you watched American TV in the 80s you'd know what that means).

I have also read it recommended to perform an oil change after using BG44K.

Re: Fuel injector cleaners? 850 1995

The additives in the gas will keep the injectors clean. Unfortunately, the same chemicals tend to create a buildup of carbon on the backs of the intake valves (at least in some engines). Using one of the additional gas additives will certainly not hurt, and could help (sometimes a great deal).

In order of those I would choose: AMSOIL PI, BG 44K, Techron, Redline SI.

Thanks for the reply--I'll try out whichever product I can find at the autoparts stores in my area. If it doesn't hurt, why not...keeps my mind at ease.

Re: Fuel injector cleaners? 850 1995

I'll 2nd Dick in Falls Church. I used Amsoil Performance Inject Additive each fill up. I also use BG 44K every 4 months. Also, a good hard run on the interstate helps once in a while.

Best of Luck

Re: Fuel injector cleaners? 850 1995

Oh don't worry--my Volvo gets it's share of good hard runs on the highway from time to time! Albeit, with no one else around (or close to no one around) on a dry highway ONLY.

Thanks for the tips.
