Air bag removal 850

I am ready to remove the dash on my 1996 854, but before I do, a simple question:

Are the two T30 screws in the steering wheel deeply recessed for the 850's? I took a look and it looks to be only about 1.5 inches deep, easy for my folding torx driver. Or are all of the online procedures just for the S/V70s?

Any helpful hints on dash mount reinforcement are also appreciated. No welding or torches please.

Easy as pie? The short T30 driver was perfect! The upper dash is out, about 2 slow methodical hours. I am waiting for some glue to set so it will go back in tomorrow.

The vent flaps for the dash were closed too tight, past the normal resting spot, and would not go back down without a lot of force (the small vent motor couldn't handle it).

The dash upper mounts look good, reinforced with metal.

      Hola Amigo,

What made the vents close tightly??

Are you replacing the damper motors????

You are tackling jobs that I never done, maybe one day when I have some spare time!!

I was in Chicago last week, for my best friend's funeral which precluded my stopping by your place.

The vents in the center dash were not just closed, but about an inch past the closed position. The vent motor was not strong enough to open them, but neither was I when I pulled the motor off.
The strange thing was that the junk yard donor car was in the same position! Fortunately the part I wanted was not broken. So tomorrow it all goes back together and we will see if I get fresh air back into the dash vents.

I am sorry to hear about your friend.

Can the position of the vents be an indication that the vent motor is busted.

If the donor car also had the vents in the same position, can this indicate a

bad vent motor. Before putting everything together, might be a good idea to

cycle the motors or check the resistance at least!!!

The dash is back in now. The motors were checked for motion and resistance and seem to be just fine. I will need to go through the 999 reset test as the codes are still present.

It is nice to have air coming through the dash vents!

You should've dug in deep and just replaced the evaporator at the same time. LOL This masochist just finish my SECOND evap. You remember I tackled the 99 XC last summer and this time the 855T.

sorry to hear about the death Klaus.

Now that I have fixed the ECC vents, I can finally charge the AC and see how long 12oz lasts. I didn't have the floor space in the garage to pull the evaporator this summer, besides I also didn't have the ambition in case there are leaks elsewhere.

It will be a great winter car!
