S70 Key and Ignition issue S70

My 2000 S70 has a new problem. The car turns over and starts fine, however, frequently stops running before I get it into gear (5 speed manual). I have only used one key in fourteen years, and one guru seems to feel that the condition of my key is causing the issue due to wear. So, I switched keys and the problem was corrected for about two weeks. Now it is occurring again. Is there a key "reader" in the ignition that can be repaired/replaced? Does the entire ignition require replacement? Will I have to get new keys with new identity chips? Some thoughts please.

In 1999, Volvo installed a security ring behind the tumbler. This can wear and or corrode over time. Pull off the clamshell cover and you will see it. It is just an antenna to send the signal from the key's chip to the security module.

Unclip the connector and clean it off so it shines. In rare cases the ring itself is worn out and needs to be replaced, easy to do and cheap.

No, you will not need any programming to do this and your keys are still good.
