Just purchased an S60 auto, FWD. On the way home stopped for a bite to eat. Could not get the key turned all the way off or get the key out of the ingition. Decided to just go on home. Started the car but could not shift into drive or any other gear, could not move the shifter. After a while move the telescoping steering wheel an the key turned off an removed. Started the car an could shift. What sensor is bad and where is it.

    Not knowing anything about the NEW cars, the older cars had a cable between the key lock and the shifter. The cable could get stuck in the key area and cause those same symptoms. Removal of the clam shell around the steering column will let you see what goes on. The cable slides into a shaft and needs to be lubed, use some light oil (not WD30) and slide the cable back and forth to spread it around.

      Thanks Klaus that cable is exactly what the problem was.I guess it was never installed correctly.

      insert the key, turn to position 1, all dash lights will come on, but don't proceed to start the car. Once the nuissance seat belt buzzer stops, and ensuring the radio and climate control fan are all the way off, apply and release the the brake pedal, listening for the mechanism that allows you to shift from park to engage. If you have intermittency here I would start by checkin the the brake switch, down by the pedal to see if it is not aligned or has suffered some sort of damage. If you hear the shift release mechanism engage appropriately then I would move onto cleaning the shift release button, as mentioned above it does get gummed up.

    The button that you push in with you fingers while shifting, gets stuck in. The key will not come out if it is in the IN position. Spray some silicone spray or WD40 and it should be good for a few months.

    Make sure that the lever on the shifter is not sticking in a bit (it can get gunked up and not come all the way back out when you release it). Also check to make sure your shift interlock button is functioning properly-- they get gummed up with spilled coffee, etc.
