Timing belt V70-XC70

Hey all, starting in on my timing belt/waterpump replacement. First issue is, my 99 XC70 timing belt cover does not have those handy cam timing marks that i see in many photos and videos.

If you don't have the small plastic cover over the cam sprockets, two suggestions. Go to a junk yard and pick one up, 1999-2000. Or make your own if you are handy:

Rotate the engine until you see the crank mark line up with the mark on the block. Check the cam marks, they should be at 1 and 11 o'clock (close to it). If not rotate the crank once more. When the crank lines up and the sprockets appear to be "on" the virtual mark, continue to turn the crank another 90 degrees and then rotate the crank counter clockwise back to the mark. Find a good reference point to mark the sprocket alignment and use white out or some other suitable marking stripe.

The reason to rotate the crank an additional 90 degrees is to remove pressure on the VVT. And, yes, your car does have one.

      Found this on line

"The 2 timing marks line up with the notches in the timing cover. They line up at 12 o'clock. The crank mark is harder to see. It's easier to see with the balancer off. Good luck. I hope that helped?"

      I think I found it.

I am a little bummed I have to remove the crank serp. pully.
Also, my engine # is rubbed off the timing cover, I cant read the numbers on the back of the block. Why the hell dont they just put it on the front.

Stupid VVT! And me too, because the 1999 cars have little notches cut out at the 12:00 position.

Make sure all three marks are lined up!

Rather than marks on the cover, I believe your 99 should look like this:
