Noisy Air Conditioner Compressor V70-XC70

The free running pulley bearing on my 2003 V70 air conditioner compressor is smooth but loose. When spun it makes a sound like an old clip-on roller skate wheel. The noise is annoying and I would like to replace the bearing. The air conditioner works fine otherwise. I lowered the front of the front subframe to get access to the compressor pulley, removed the bolt from the center of the clutch plate and attached a puller using the three 5mm X 0.8/mm holes in the clutch plate. I applied as much torque to the pointed puller screw as I could with an eight inch ratchet wrench (maybe 30 to 50 pounds) and could not get the clutch plate to move away from the pulley at all. I was afraid to apply more torque with a longer wrench for fear of damaging the clutch plate or the air conditioner compressor. How common is it that the clutch plate will be broken and have to be replaced when disassembling a Volvo air conditioner compressor? Dare I get out the breaker bar?
Thanks Jrip

Once the clutch is off, look for a snap ring that holds the pulley and bearing in place.

If the clutch gap is too large, move the shims while the clutch is off to narrow the gap.

Thanks for the help. I followed your advice to get the pulley off, and replaced the bearing. All is quiet. My puller has a center screw, and I ultimately drilled the end of the center screw and inserted a .189"D X 1.75"L rod. The rod clears the threads of the 6mm hole in the compressor shaft and pushes on the bottom of the hole, instead of on the recess in the clutch plate.

      Thanks again, jrip

Sorry, I am just an old school guy. Shouldn't you be tightening the 3 nuts to pull off the clutch? Like this:

    Stay away from breaker bars!
