Creeky steering S70 1998

Hey all I got one for you. A few days ago my car started making some funny noises when I turn the wheel. From any position, moving or stopped, whenever I turn the wheel to the right I hear a creaking noise which seems to be coming from the left front wheel area. It only does this when turning right but it doesn't matter whether the wheels are straight, pointed left, or pointed right, whenever I turn the wheel to the right it does it. Yesterday it got pretty bad but today it seems to have subsided a bit. Any ideas? Thanks

Re: Creeky steering S70 1998

I am interested to know the outcome of your problem. I just bought a 1998 S70 GLT with 39,000 miles on it and as soon as I left the dealer I noticed that at slower speeds whenever I turn the wheel to the right I also get a creaking or grinding noise. My first thought was that it was the brakes but they seem fine. I visually looked at my joints, boots, etc.., but nothing seemed out of the ordinary. I am taking it back to the dealer for the 3rd time this friday. Let me know your thoughts.. Can you reply to my email address also: kriese515@home.com....thanks.

Re: Creeky steering S70 1998

It ended up being the upper strut mount bushing on the drivers side. Its a rubber donut that sits directly below the mounting bolt on the strut shaft. It apparently dried out a bit causing it to hang up when I turned the wheel to the left. I was going to replace it but we had some wet weather the other day and that seemed to remoisturise it. As of now the noise has gone away and I have had no further problems. If it comes back I imagine I should only have to change that piece to get rid of it. Check that as a source of the noise. Otherwise I dont really know.

Re: Creeky steering S70 1998

Check the strut mounts is the first thing I would do. Then maybe check the level of your power steering fluid. If still nothing maybe check the tierods for damage. Thats about all I can think of.

Re: Creeky steering S70 1998

what exactly should I be looking for when I check out the (upper/lower/both?) strut mounts? I know I have plenty of power steering fluid. Could it have anything to do with the pivot points of the steering knuckle or the steering rack itself?
