sway bar bushings 850 1992

Hi,

On early 850, the bushings on the front sway bar are not

vulcanized and can be changed. I have read that a special

tool is needed take the old ones off and put the new ones

on. Has anybody tried that? How hard is this?

Thanks,

Dmitri

Re: sway bar bushings 850 1992

There is no special tool needed. I believe the two bolts holding each sway bar bracket are 14mm. When I change mine, which is about every 15k on my 93 850, I use several extentions on a ratchet and drop down on the bolts from under the hood. There is not enough room to turn a wrench from under the car. Also, you might want to apply alittle grease to the new bushing before putting them on. It make it alot easy when slipping them onto the sway bar.

      Thank you very much, dj!

I have changed the bushings - the clunking is gone!

      The ride feels very different.

I could not unscrew the left hind bolt from above because

of some copper tube, but there was enough space from beneath

      the car for this one.

      Regards,

      Dmitri

Can you see visible space between the bar and the bushing as a signle to change it, or do you just do this for prevention?

Re: sway bar bushings 850 1992

When I shake the sway bar, I feel a noticeable play. I suspect this

is responsible for the clunks on bumpy roads.

Thanks for the information, d! Do you mean that the bushings can

be changed without sinking the mounting frame, just by unscrewing

the link arms and the brackets?

        Regards,

        Dmitri

No, you do not have to drop the frame. I drop down from under the hood with alot of extentions on my ratchet. I know the bushing are worn out when I can fell a bump in the front end while driving. Also if you bounce the front corner, at the fender or bumper, you should be able to hear a clunking noise. Or you can lay down next to the car, put your hand on the sway bar while someone else bounces the front end. If you can feel the sway bar moving, its proabably the bushings worn out.
