Instrument Cluter Removal for Odometer Fix 850 95

I've posted before regarding my odometer that is running in kilometers rather than miles. I've taken the car to 2 dealerships and they want over $1000 to remove and replace the instrument cluster with a new one. I found a garage that will actually FIX the cluster for about $200 but they're up in LA so I've got to send it to them. So my question is this: How do I remove the instrument cluster so that I can pull out the odometer (and/or cluster) to send to them for repair or should I just pay the dealership to pull it out for me so that I can send it to be repaired?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

You can goto http://www.volvospeed.com/maintence.htm for a proceedure for removing the instrument cluster. However, if you just need to reset the spedo to read miles, I believe you can do this by sending a specific code to the computer via the on board diagnostic system. As I remember, you use the A7 lead and enter diagnostic test mode 5 and then 6 to send the codes. You might want to check with a tech about this. I seem to remember something about only being able to enter the codes once for the spedo.

Re: Instrument Cluter Removal for Odometer Fix 850 94

Someone on this board mentioned resetting the odometer using the volvo scan tool in mode 6 diagnostics. The dealer mechanics said that this couldn't be done in my 95. I don't have a VST - unless somebody in So. Cal has one and wants to show me...

I don't know how to diagnose if my odometer problem is electrical or mechanical. The trip computer is reading in miles. The trip odometer and main odometer are in KM (odometer x 0.6 = trip computer). The only real solution that I can see is sending the odometer off to somebody who can fix it. Of course I'm open to any suggestions.

      Thanks again,

      Rob

The dealer said the same thing to me: just get used to KM.

But I like to keep track of when I should perform maintenance, etc. And if I should ever decide to sell the car I don't think that a buyer will believe the KM vs. Miles thing.
