If you are certian that the check engine light is from your gas cap then secure the cap and wait, as soon as the test is passed the light will go out. Don't bother disconnecting the battery it will not erase your codes.

Thanks Rich! Any idea how long it will take to reset? BTW, I'm sure this is the reason the light came on. Has done it before and the diagnosis is always "massive vacuum leak". I also found the cap hanging by the tether but loose in the fill pipe. It seems the light always comes on during an extended idle period. Once at the bank drive thru and this time waiting for a train.

If conditions are met, 12 minutes after starting your car the ECU will try to run a tank test, every key cycle. So to force it start your car drive for about 15 minutes, pull over and stop, still in gear is ok, just keep your foot on the break, and it should try to run a test. You might have to try it a few times.

If you pump your own gas as I do(I just cant let those ass holes get too close to my car)just be sure the cap is tight enough. If you dont pump your own gas......at least replace your own gas cap(correctly).

        good luck,

Yes, go buy the OBD-II scanner. Otherwise, you could try disconnecting the battery for I believe 10 minutes. Not sure if it works, but couldn't hurt to try. Just make sure you have the security code for your radio.
