Oil drain plug tourqe ratings? V70-XC70 2001

The manual does not mention how tight you should make the oil drain plug. Anyone know? Also, has anyone ever stripped it? It seems feasible since it looks like the threads are aluminum rather than having a steel insert.

Re: Oil drain plug tourqe ratings? V70-XC70 2001

I, too, had reservations about overtightening the oil drain plug being the the plug was steel and the pan aluminum. I solved that problem with a Fumoto oil drain plug. It is a quality brass housing with a stainless steel valve so you never have to remove the plug again. Go to the Fumoto website at "www.fumotovalve.com" and check it out. I've had mine for 4 years now and it's great. Oil changes are a breeze now!

26lb/ft. Its not that much on these cars. As you mentioned the AL components tend to be soft.

Re: Oil drain plug tourqe ratings? V70-XC70 2001

I have a 2001 V70 T5, so I presume the engine pan/drain, etc. are the same as the 2001 V70 2.4T (XC).

I have used Fumoto valves on other engines, and they really work great and save alot of hassle.I planned to install one on my 2001 Volvo, but on visual inspection, it looks like there is a bulge in the pan near the drain plug that would make installation of the Fumoto valve difficult.

If anyone has successfully installed a Fumoto valve on a 2001 V70 turbomotor, please let us hear from you..

Roger,

Contact Fumoto at"www.fumotovalve.com" and ask about an adapter for your valve. It is an extension of about 3/4 inch to clear the ridge on your pan. I did that and it worked fine. It's also made of brass and runs around $5 or $6.

Re: Oil drain plug tourqe ratings? V70-XC70 2001

You know, this sounds like a good idea, but I have found that many of my past "good ideas" came back to haunt me. My concern is that first there is a 3/4" extension and then a quick drain valve that would add length to this extension - about another inch, give or take? - and that much sticking down from my oil pan bothers me. It would not take much to snap that baby off - oooops, no oil. Am I being overly conservative or do you just take sleeping pills at night?

Ray,

This is a good idea that is a "good idea". It doesn't stick down at all.

Re: Oil drain plug tourqe ratings? V70-XC70 2001

Further discussing the Fumoto valve:

On the 2001 T5 engine, the drain plug is on the bottom rear of the pan, facing aft, so the use of an adapter would not be a problem. When I evaluated installing a Fumoto valve on my engine, what I found was that they don't make an adapter in the size needed. Off the top of my head, I can't remember the size of the threads.

Can anyone with a late model turbomotor say what thread size the plug is?

I think I'll make a new post and see what turns up.

Re: Oil drain plug tourqe ratings? V70-XC70 2001

Roger,

I KNOW that they make an adapter for this particular Fumoto oil drain plug. I bought it from them last year when I encountered the problem of the interfering 'ridge'. The adapter is made of the same brass the rest of the oil drain plug is made of. Contact them at their website."www.fumotovalve.com".
