Reduced Power twice in a week S60 2004

2004 S60, about 140,000 miles.

Last week my son's S60 displayed Reduced Power message and he said it would barely go above idle speed. He limped home, turned off car and restarted. It was fine. He put on OBDII reader on it over the weekend and got no code (the CEL never came on).

Drove it for another week and it did the same thing today. This time he pulled into a parking lot, turned off engine, pulled codes again (again, nothing) and it started and drove fine.

Twice in a week is not a good pattern. "Rebooting" fixes it for now but seems like it could just decide not to go at all someday.

I've read about the electronic throttle causing the reduced power mode but posts seem to deal with older cars. Also read about silent warranty but only for total failure and right now we don't have any evidence.

Since the car does not log any codes how do I go about diagnosing this problem? Is there something to clean some such maintenance or do we suck it up and get another module?

This doesn't sound like an ETM issue, besides that was not an issue with cars newer than 2002. It does sound more like a CEM problem. Remember, there are 3 major computers talking to each other and if one burps, the others hold their breath.

Until the CEL comes on, there is little a generic scanner can find.

Good to know the ETM does not apply if only to keep us from chasing the wrong thing.

Do I wait for a bigger failure or is this something that a generic scanner will not get but the more capable dealer equipment can diagnose? Do you expect it will eventually log a useful code?

It's one of those messages that can be diagnosed only while the message is active, and then only with a Volvo software tool. It doesn't sound like there will be a 'pending' error stored.

This message is the same as the old 'limp home mode'.

Try moving the shifter to manual mode and shift gears and see if that helps you get back up to speed.

I have an 08 'other make' and it doesn't even bother to give me a message when it goes into limp home mode. No CEL, nothing. After a restart, all is good.
