Brake noise 850

While trying to find a wheel noise during right hand turns at about 20mph, I lifted the E brake handle. The usual 'clunk' from the new shoes, and then 'click', 'click', 'click' as the wheels turn. Well, this got my attention real fast!

The clicks are wheel rotation dependent, and appear to be two clicks per rotation but not sure. Letting off the E brake, the noise goes away. This is light pressure BTW, no need to kill the parking brake.

Anyone had this? I think it is only one wheel, left rear.

Did I not tighten something down? Is the spring touching something that rotates? Brand new rotors and pads/hangers.

Thanks...

Try the same thing in reverse?

I take it that you don't want to get frozen to the ground taking things apart

It's 38F!!! So I went to the rear of the car to take a look - wheel still on. The brake cable is about 1 mm from the inside of the rear tire. When I pull on the brake, the tension moves the cable enough to just touch the raised lettering and cause the cable to slap down.

OK, just don't use the Ebrake until it is warm enough to take the wheel off, slide the cable's small sheathing rearward about 1.5 inches and clamp it back down. Easy, I hope.

BTW, I tried going backwards to listen for the noise, but that didn't work. The wheels just stopped turning on the snow pack and the wheels just slid.

At least there is nothing wrong with the brakes. Just my handiwork!

Klaus

Good call! I will have to try that, in case I have some ice in there.

Quite right about a cold garage, there is ice on the floor under the rear wheels. We just went through 17 consecutive mornings below 0F, and that gets old after just 3 days.

I cannot imagine what could possibly 'click' inside a brand new rotor and shoes. The only moving part is the rotor, and that is smooth.

There is a strange problem with the parking brake light... It turns on when the handle is lifted 1-2 mm and then turns off after the first click. This is only when the car is moving. When parked, the light functions as it should.
