S40 Camshaft to sprocket timing gear S40-V40

I am in the middle of doing a head job on a 2000 S40. I had pulled the belt, marked the cam gears and had the engine set at top dead center.

However when the head went to the machine shop, they pulled the cam gears off of the tapered end of the cams. So now my issue is that I have no idea how to line the cams up with their sprockets as there are no marks.

Is there anyway to do this without buying the special tools from Volvo?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Using the grooves in the rear of the cams, lock them in place with a flat bar or a locking tool. I hope, as I am not that familiar with the 4 cyl engine.

Google 'volvo s40 camshaft alignment' and find some words about the 4 cyl. If you have VVT, you will need a locking tool anyway to hold the cam with 80 lbs of torque on the other end.
