transmission trouble 850

Hi All:

I got stuck in a neighbors driveway in the snow and slush. I was rocking the car back and forth at high rpm when the flashing light came on. I got the car off the driveway and the light went off after a bit, but going home, the car now slips out of gear. Is it possible this is the PNP switch or the winter mode switch gone bad, or is more likely the transmission is now toast? Can these transmissions be rebuilt?

Thx.

If you want to get it rebuilt I can recommend Wholesale Transmission, Walden Avenue, Lancaster {Buffalo] NY. They did a great job after my wife cooked the planets on ours. If you want good pricing on a used one- Erie Volvo in central NY will ship. Good guys, good pricing lifetime warranty.

Hi All:

Finally got my car back today. The shop manager said there were 3 shift failure codes in the computer, which he cleared and he added a quart of tranny fluid. I had added a quart the day b4 I brought it in, so it was 2 quarts low. Anyway, he test drove it and it shifted fine. I drove it around all morning and it shifts fine. I had also replaced the shift mode switch because the winter button no longer worked (too many mountain dew spills). Its kind of scary driving the car now as I don't trust my good luck at this point, but maybe I just did overheat it. 107.00 was the bill. Has anyone replaced the shift lock overide selenoid? I might have him do that as well as I'm tired of hitting the button all the time.

Thx.

Two quarts down and overheated will present all kinds of errors. You also have a good mechanic!

The shift lock solenoid is under the center console, close to the neutral indicator but on the right hand side.

Yes, they are really good mechanics, especially with electrical problems. Anyone need a good reference in Grand Rapids, MI, let me know.

By the way, I took a hack saw to my parking brake cables years ago and removed all hardware as I couldn't stand all the noise from the parking system. It's nice to have for working on the car as far as rolling, but I couldn't see the expense or trouble. I would be surprised if your cable is too short......must be something else.......

Most likely you 'cooked' the ATF. Check the fluid first. Flush it with new ATF if it is dark colored. And STOP rocking the car with high rpms!!

Once the wheels start to slip, you have lost traction. Spinning the wheels will only result in deeper ruts and glazed ice making it even harder to get unstuck.

These trannies are not the old 3 speed GM versions seen in the 70's and 80's. They serriously dislike abrupt change in direction and will kill themselves.

I would not get it 'rebuilt', I would get it replaced if a flush doesn't help with the slipping. You didn't say what year the car is, but you should be able to use a 1998 or earlier tranny.

Thanks Klaus.

The transmission fluid is clear red, so I'm not thinking that's the problem. I let it sit this afternoon in the garage and started it up and drove it the short distance to the shop with no light on and no problem. But it slips after 15 minutes of driving. The mechanic said he will check the codes and see if there is an electrical problem. If it's a belt or plate issue, he quoted me 900.00 to install a transmission I get on ebay. He is looking up compatible years for a 1994. Will post the outcome.

There are no belts. Sounds like the torque converter or an internal seal blew and got ATF on the torque converter.

See if there is a local junk yard, shipping is a problem $$$. Look up www.erievovo.com and call them. They might have a good 1998, they back it up with a 1 year.

From what I can determine, the 1998 will work except for the speed signal wires, but then you will want to use the 1994 wire for that.

Ask the mechanic if is it is possible to replace the rear main seal with a good Volvo seal while the trany is off. Yes, I know, the flywheel has to come off for that, but he will be so close...

I found several on ebay sub 500.00.......

I was thinking the same thing with the rear main seal, but they replaced it when they put the new motor I got off ebay 4 years ago. Might as well though. I'm hoping its just something electrical, but wont know till he views the codes and test drives.

thx...

If the RMS is only 4 years old, then don't bother. Mechanic can always check for oil weepage first.

Ebay is great, but check the seller for reputation.
