No-spark No-start 850 1995

Howdy folks. I've been recruited to try to get my friend's car running again.

She said she drove it around low on fuel, parked it, and then it stopped running. Thought it was out of gas, added some to the tank, etc.

I went out and looked at it. Fuel pump relay seems to work, but couldn't figure out the jumpering to bypass it. Fuses are also intact (except the cigarette lighter, but I replaced that).

Tried it on starting fluid - not even a cough. Timing belt is intact. I checked for spark from the coil to the distributor, and .... nothing. I probed the coil feeds and set my meter to hold at the highest value it read and ... nothing. Not even a cough or sputter.

So no power to the coil. Looking at the power-stage (mounted on the same plate as the coil), the connector and the power stage had some ...corrosion? or dielectric grease that turned slightly green on them. I cleaned that off, but it was getting dark by that point.

What should I look at next? I'm thinking maybe the crank position sensor? On 700's, the fuel pumps are only powered when the ECU detects cranking and for a few seconds on initial key-on.

Also tried starting with the AMM unplugged - no change. It's odd because it cranks normally, but only sounds like it's firing one or two times a second. I'm not sure how else to describe it.

if I had to write out the noise of it cranking, it would be tch-tch-tch-buhtch-buhtch-tch-tch...

Also, the battery was deader than dirt - never seen a 12V battery read 0.25V before. I thought my meter was on the wrong settings at first.

I noticed it DOES have the black OBD1 blinky-light setup. Is there a list of all the codes somewhere like there is for the 700/900's?

EDIT: The coil tests good according to this thread: http://www.brickboard.com/AWD/volvo/827069/850/spark.html 0.6ohms on primary side, 8.35KOhms secondary. Pins 1 and 2 on the power stage have 0.2Ohms.
1 to 4 gives 2.5Kohms,
1 to 3 - open
2 to 3 - open
4 to 3 - open.

Cheers

The above also has a link on a how to use the diagnostic boxes. The B box is for other stuff, don't bother for now.

The crank position sensor will turn off spark if there is an error.

To bypass the fuel pump relay, #103, jump 15 and 87.
You should be able to hear the fuel pump work for about 2-3 seconds after turning the key to position II. Jumping the relay will cause the fuel pump to always be on if the key is in posII.

A new battery will be needed, or at least a charger. Low voltage will have other problems.

First, you did get a new battery I assume?

Get a hold of a Haynes for 850's. There is a code listing in there. A2 should be the active socket for all codes if her 95 is like my 95 855. I am not 100% sure, but I believe my 95 has the Motronic 4.3 engine management system with one ECU and a single read-out from socket A2. Also try socket A6. If you get a response from A6 that means she has the LH 3.2 Jetronic fuel system. In that LH 3.2 system, A6 will give you ignition codes and A2 will be fuel codes.

I know you said you had no spark at the coil. Nevertheless, do a search on lawnmower syndrome. If either of you started the car when cold and shut it down immediatedly after starting it could be LMS. The car will crank but not fire because the compression is gone. The cold start/quick shutoff washes the top of the engine with gas causing no compression in the engine. The cure is to floor the puppy and crank continously for about 2 minutes. If it fires great! If not, wait for the starter to cool and then do it again. BTW - It will run rough then smooth out. As me how I know about this....:)

P.S. If you don't have access to a Haynes, post any codes you get here and I'll tell you what they are.

Awesome, thank you. It actually has two black OBD boxes under the hood. I'll check them both for codes on all their sockets.

Hmmm. I saw another mention of lawnmower syndrome. I may add a little oil to the cylinder heads, but I think the no-spark is causing a no-fuel situation - or whatever is causing the no-spark is causing a no-fuel situation. The plugs weren't coming out wet except with apparent condensation or something from sitting for ages and ages.

And I transferred my battery from my 740 for diagnostics. We'll replace it if we figure out something specifically wrong.

Looking at the boxes from the front of the car (looking from the grill towards rear of car), the left OBD box is "A". The right one is "B". "B" is for tranny and ABS codes only. The only 2 sockets you need to be concerned about are "A" 2 and "A" 6.

When I tested my coil I had a hard time getting an accurate read-out too. I'd also test the cam position senssor where the wires enter the sensor. Are the wires, dizzy cap and rotor good?

There is a second fuel relay mounted on top of the radiator. Don't know much about it, but if I remember correctly it is only responsible for the fuel injectors.

          Alllllll right!

Cleared codes, cranked twice for about 10-20 seconds, left key in KP2 and got a 3-1-4 code - missing CMP signal.

I pulled the cam sensor, and the pigtail has +5 and +~10.5V and a ground pin. Backprobing the pigtail with the sensor connected and installed, and removing the sensor to run a feeler gauge through the gap gave me 0 Hz (on a 20kHz scale) and 0V and 0Amps on both digital and analog meters.

Looks like I just replace the sensor now, eh?

Also, I cleared the code, got 1-1-1 and repeated the crank attempt. Got another 314 code.

So I stopped and got a used one out of a 96 850 from the wrecker's for about 1/3 of what FCP is asking for them.

I'll make sure it interchanges and then try it out tomorrow (my birthday). Wheeeee.

Should work. Think they are all the same for 850's and early S70/V70's.

              Keep us updated...:)

Will do. :) Hopefully that's it. Apparently this beast has been sitting for over a year though. It'll need fresh oil and gas and I might change the plugs because they look nasty and there was a bit of rust on one I pulled out.

My old 93 sat for quite awhile before I sold it. I too inadvertently ran it it out of gas. It was a b**ch to restart! Try new gas and some Marvel Mystery oil in the gas tank. That finally worked for me. And clean the flame trap/hoses.

                    Woot woot!

I replaced the CMP sensor and it fired right up, old gas and crappy plugs and all!

I changed the plugs today and am waiting on some info to get the battery replaced.

Cheers and thanks for the help!
