strut top nut 850

Hi all:

Still driving my car with 4th gear not locking up.....not an issue unless I hit the highway.....looking at other cars in the meantime....

Anway, spring seat broke on one of the zillions of potholes here in michigan and I tried to replace it this weekend, but couldnt get the 21mm nut off the top of the strut......do you have to put the piston rod in a vice or something? Does the special star nut come off easily?

Thx.

The star nut actually holds the spring seat in place, so you can take the top nut off. For safety, I don't unless either the car is on the ground or I have a spring compressor on there, you just never know.

Comment on the FCP video, they show the tech using a drift or wrench to tighten the star nut. That's a no go, star nut will loosen right up. Make a 4 side socket (you'll see when you see the star nut) from a cheap impact socket. If you don't have an impact gun, get a hand impact, you need to get that sucker torqued or it will loosen up (ask me how I know). Once strut is back in car and car is on ground, you can remove top nut and tighten star nut with some kind of impact. Good luck.

Impact works best here, or if its the old strut you can try a vice grip on the shaft, but I've never had any luck with that approach. The star nut comes off easy with a few taps, but it needs to be tight after reinstall with new struts. I suggest re-installing on car with out top cap and "making" a 4 slot tool from a harbor freight impact socket. Blip it a couple of time with the impact gun to make sure its tight, then spin on the top cap and nut. You should be good to go. good luck.

      Thx Mike:

I saw the FCP video on you-tube and the guy uses an impact driver to get the nut off. I don't have one so I'm going to try the vice method next.

The top of the strut actually has a flat section, I use an adjustable wrench on it, or a small wrench.

ONLY loosen the top nut prior to strut removal. Do not remove it or the star nut until the spring is compressed. Compress the spring out of the car.

Watch out for the wires to the ABS sensors!!!

          thanks Klaus:

It's a Bilstien Heavy duty strut and it has a 7mm allen on the top instead of a flat spot and i stripped it out. I'm going to rent an impact driver from home depot tom. and see if it helps. will also try to make the tool mike talks about for the star nut. I can see where a loose one would cause problems in a hurry.

If worse comes to worse, compress the springs (safety first) and just get yourself a $15 grinder at harbor freight and cut it off. This is worst case scenario, but nonetheless, an option.
