Questions about my red volvo 850R 's paint 850 96

Hi,

Ive got a 96 volvo 850R salloon and i care for it very much. I'm really worried about polishes and waxes coz i want my car to look the absolute best. I have used autoglym super resin polish but i get my red paint on my polishing cloth and it leaves me a little worried. Autoglym say its due to oxididzed paint thats been lifted off with the polish. I just need to know what type of paint i have on my car (its the firey red only for 850R's). And if anyone has some suggestions for good polishes and waxes that would be great.

Thanks for your time

Jan.

Can someone also provide the part number for

touch-up paint? I know Volvo sells OEM touchup

but can't seem to find alternatives at PepBoys.

Pls post if you've found one for the 850R red.

Open your hood, and on the driver side you will have a chassi plate that will tell you the paint code usually a three numbercode.

Also ,CK YOUR OWNERS MANUAL THAT EVERYBODY HAS LOCKED IN A SAFE POSITION SO NOBODY CAN GET IT (GLOVEBOX?????)

Re: Questions about my red volvo 850R 's paint 850 96

    Hi Jan.

I have one of those red 850R's myself.

Just a little heads up about the paint on these cars

they are what they call single stage and does not have

any clear coat layer on top.

Pretty important to know when you chose your compounds and waxes.

Hope you enjoy your ride as much as i do mine.

    /Thomas

Re: Questions about my red volvo 850R 's paint S70 98

Here's the scoop. Having detailed cars professionally for two years my experience has taught me that of all polishing compounds, Meguirs is one of, if not the best polish out there. What you want to do whenever you work on the car is apply Meguirs #2 fine cut cleaner. This will remove the old wax but not damage the paint or trim. Once you're done with that apply wax. I've found that Zymol is an extraordinarily good wax but it is very expensive (30 bucks + per bottle). A cheaper alternative is Turtle Wax Emerald series or Mother's. Both work very well. I personally use the turtle wax. This practice once every six months should do well for you. I have over 110,000 miles on my car and the original paint still looks mint if you ignore a few chips in the hood (damn trucks). Whatever you do stay away from any polishing compounds that say deep, harsh, etc. cut. Those are only meant for really bad scratches and baked on dirt, rubber, etc. THESE WILL DESTROY YOUR PAINT WITH VERY LITTLE EFFORT!!!!!!!!!!

Paint Question, how to remove hard water stains 850 1994

I have 1994 854T that I purchased from my father. He didn't take the best care of the paint job and there are many hard water stains in the paint. I've already tried the Meguirs 3 step system, it has a cleaner, polisher, and waxer. The cleaner says that it will get out hard water stains, but no matter how hard I tried it barely did anything to reduce the stains. Is there any product out there that will help me get out those stains without damaging the clear coat. My car is the deep maroon (deep red) color. There is also one small section on my door that has some paint overspray I think, is there anything that can get this out without damaging the clear coat as well? Thanks in advance for the advise.

      Scott

Re: Paint Question, how to remove hard water stains 850 1994

Unfortunately, there is nothing that can be done about that overspray short of sanding it off. Car paint is designed to resist all forms of polishes otherwise it would be destroyed every time you had your car detailed. As such nothing I know of will get that out. As for the hard water stains, which cleaner did you use? If you used #2 and that didnt work you can try #4 which is a lot harsher but BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL!!!! This stuff is harsh and it can scratch your paint real bad if you apply to much pressure. The best thing to do is apply a lot of pressure (dont lean on it but push hard) with #2 and if that doesnt work, put a little #4 on the spot then rub the area with an applicator pad or SOFT towel but dont push on it. Only use enough pressure to keep the pad/towel in contact with the spot. If that doesnt work try pushing a little harder but not much. If that doesnt get it out then you have something a bit more han hardwater stains. The other thing you could try though I dont recommend it is to use one of those bathroom glass cleaners that are designed for hard water removal. This might work but I have no idea what the impact to your paint will be. If you want to take this route, apply a little to an area that no one will ever see again (like a piece of scrap metal that you put a bit of touch up paint on) rub it as if it had a stain on it, then wipe it off and rinse it. If after a day or two nothing happens to the paint there then you're probably okay. I'm not making any promises about long term though because I don't know what they put in those cleaners so this is at your own risk. Good luck

Any polish will contain a certain amount of abrasive. And even some wax makers incorporate some abrasives into their product.

If you are really worried about removing clear coat or even paint, stay away from polishes.

Re: Questions about my red volvo 850R 's paint 850 94

How can you be sure what style of paint you have?

I have a '94 850 NA with Pacific Blue paint.

My inlaws have a '96 960 with the special fire red paint.

      thanks

      Jon Morgan
