R wagon ABS light on - ideas?? 850 96R

Hey folks,

So, after a sharp turn (maybe unrelated) the ABS light came on and stayed on. Then, after being parked, the light was off. During this "off time" if I pressed the Tracs button, the ABS light would come on and go off - with the action of the button. Is this a guaranteed trip to the dealer? Thanks in advance from another R owner newbie to the board.

Chad:

In my case the TRACS and ABS light would come on whenever they felt like. Took it to the dealership and they told me that it was a bad control unit (part #8602266-2). They said that the sensor on the rear passenger side tire went bad. Anyways, it was under warranty so I didn't have to pay but it would have cost me around $700.00. Also be ready to wait because these things are on back order so it took a month to get it in.

I hope that you are still under warranty.

Good luck.

My 97R had problems similar to that too. The only way the local dealer was able to verify the dead-ABS controller code was to drive it to the dealer when the *intermittent* problem light was on and have them check it while your car is still running. I think my problem was a faulty ABS controller (under warranty luckily-- otherwise $650).

Good luck

Try tapping your ignition switch or gently moving the ignition key slightly. If this works (ie. the ABS light goes out) you'll need a new ignition switch at some point. I note you posted during daylight. You may also find your headlights don't work when the ABS light is on.
