headlight mystery 850 96

anyone have any idea why my headlights might be turning on when I hit the brakes? It only happens when I have the lights turned off. The lamp out indicator lights up on the dash, and the lights come on when the brakes are activated. When the light switch is in the parking light or headlights on position, there is no malfunction, no indicators. Any help would be appreciated. The fuses are all intact and the bulbs are all working. The other complicated factor is that I have a Volvo factory trailer harness mounted in the rear. A carwash seems to have triggered the problem.

    Re: headlight mystery 850 96

Your guess about the trailer connector is probably correct. The diode assembly in the box has probably become junk with induction of H2O and my guess is disconneting it will cure the problem. One other item, if ANY of the lamp assys in th rear of the car are not EXACTLY the bulb it calls for, the current sensing diodes in the warning system will figure the bulb is out because the current draw is not at the predetermined level, high or low...it matters not. DO NOT try to replace the euro lamps with U.S. base equivalents. Something as minute as the coating on the US spec bulbs changes the resistance and will show up as a 'light out' fault on your dash.

Look to the trailer connector...that or the associated wiring is probably at fault.
