Transmission fluid change V70-XC70 2004

Hello,

I have a 2004 xc70 AWD with 144K miles. The manual states:
"**Check automatic transmission fluid level only if an external leak is identified.Volvo recommends changing automatic transmission fluid every 52,500 miles/84,000 kilometers, only on vehicles used for towing."

Really? Shouldn't the fluid be changed more often to prevent failure?

Thanks!

At 144k I would want to know if fluid was previously changed, or whether this is the first fluid change....

If it was done before set up a regular schedule for changes. Such as every 50k miles. If it is the original fluid, you may want to leave it as it is, or maybe replace it a couple quarts at a time.

    Hi,
at 75k mi I noticed my TF80-SC 6geartronic changed it's behaviour towards quarter-winter-mode. It was still shifting smoothly but I decided to get prepared for a flush ie. vida/dice&computer and decision of oil to be used (10 quarts mobil 3309). I did the flush (level check at 70deg C), trs counter reset and adaptation carefully. Now the trs is back to it's original shifting mode.

I have earlier flushed 850 4gearboxes at about 75k mi and never had any other problem than worn out gear position sensor, the other 850-94 is still
in daily use after 20 years of service.

Thanks Guys. I've been reading up on this, apparently toyotas with the same exact AW5 say to change the fluid every 30K ... and I think they have inline filters. So I was a little concerned when Volvo said to only change it if towing.

Agree with Chris, on cars where I've had automatics (940 & 850), I have either flushed myself or in the case of my old Mazda MPV, had it down. They all shift and operate well. I do it every 30 - 40 kmiles as the mood and time strikes me. This of course is no guarantee, but auto tranny's love clean fluid. Volvo, like others, has no issues whatsoever selling you a rebuilt tranny for a crazy price. Summary: flush the fluid, it's not that time consuming. Good luck.

If you followed the recommendations in the manual, the transmission would most likely survive until the end of the warranty period. After that, all bets are off. It could fail at any time but it wouldn't be on Volvo's kroner, so what do they care?

If you want the trans to last, best to get in the habit of periodic fluid replacements.
